Even within the realm of Cuban cigars, the emergence of new lancero offerings is a rare occurrence. However, this week heralds the arrival of a fresh addition in Germany: the Diplomáticos Grandes.

Introduced as part of Habanos S.A.’s prestigious Edición Regional program, this cigar is exclusively available to retailers in Germany. Despite its name implying largeness, the cigar itself is elegantly slender, measuring 7 9/16 inches (192mm) by 40 ring gauge, adopting the Laguito Especial vitola famously shared with the Trinidad Fundadores. While there was once a Diplomáticos cigar in the classic lancero size, it has been absent from the market for decades.

Priced at €19 ($20.70) per cigar or €475 ($518) per box of 25 cigars, this limited release comprises a total of 4,800 boxes.

The Edición Regional initiative, facilitated by Habanos S.A., empowers its various global distributors to nominate one cigar annually for production within their region, with occasional exceptions permitting multiple selections. These cigars must stem from brands outside of the company’s established “Global Brands,” which notably exclude Cohiba and Montecristo, and must represent a size not currently available within that particular brand’s portfolio.

Edición Regional cigars are distinguished by a secondary red and silver band bearing the inscription “Edición Regional,” typically followed by the name of the region represented by the distributor. Often, these cigars may not hit store shelves until subsequent years following their selection. In the case of the Diplomáticos Grandes, it was officially designated as part of the 2021 class of Edición Regional offerings.
