Por Larranaga Robustos de Larranaga (RE Asia Pacific)

    Origin : CubaPor Larranaga
    Format : Robusto
    Size : 124 x 20 mm (4.9 x 50)
    Release : 2007
    Price : ~$369 for a box of 25

I would like to thank FinestCubanCigars.com for providing these cigars for review. For over 10 years they ship Cuban cigars from Hong Kong at competitive prices.

This is a regional edition for Asia Pacific, released in 2007. Por Larranaga do not have a robusto in their regular line and I was quite curious how this one would taste. In fact I was even more curious to see whether this cigar would share the flavor profile with the regular production petit corona.

    Appearance : [rating:4.5/5]
Por Larranaga Robusto de Larranaga is a very good-looking cigar. It has a shiny, oily natural brown wrapper with small veins and the cap appears to be very accurately applied. The two bands look great.

    Construction : [rating:4.5/5]
Construction-wise, there is not much to report. The two cigars I smoked for this review had a comfortable draw with a slight resistance, the burn line needed a couple corrections (this is why I knocked off 1/2 star) and I was able to get as much smoke as I need to be happy out of it. Very well done.

    Flavor : [rating:4/5]
Pre-light, notes of spice and sugar were detected. After lighting, the first pulls are strangely flavorless, but just a few minutes in the cigar picks up a nice combination of spice and sweetness, the main flavors being caramel, honey (yes!) and black pepper. This reminds me of the sweet spot in the petit corona, but there’s slightly more power in the robusto. As I reach the second third, the power increases and the flavors change – although the sweetness remains, cedar flavors come to the forefront. There is also a significant amount of earth in the bouquet. The last third becomes a little heavy as the sweetness is pushed away by earth and wood.

    Value : [rating:3/5]
The price tag of almost $15 (if bought by box) seems a bit excessive to me. It’s more expensive than the Cohiba Robusto!

    Overall Rating : [rating:4/5]
Por Larranaga Robusto de Larranaga is a really nice stick. The benefits of ageing are already clearly visible and I can bet the flavors will be even more interesting within 2-5 years (it will do wonders to the last third). If it sounds like your kind of cigar, I can recommend picking up a box.

I’ve gone through a box of these and at the moment they are great!! Mainly sugar, honey, mixed in with a bit of pepper is probably the best description of the flavours (as in the review).

Too expensive ! I will try a regular line PL some day though.

The regional edition are always expensive, ha. This Por Larranaga is just not bad, IMO.

Sounds like a great cigar. Its price has kept me away though.
