Partagas Serie D No. 5 Limited Edition 2008

    Origin : CubaPartagas
    Factory Name : Short Robusto
    Size : 110 x 19.84 mm (4.3 x 50)
    Ring : 50
    Weight : 11.66 g
    Price : ~$15 each

I was happy to put my hands on this cigar because the Partagas Serie D No. 5 LE 2008 sold out very fast in my local cigar shops and I almost forgot about it. Following the trend, it is a short robusto that is supposed to pack a full array of flavors in a small vitola. A mini-PD4, in other words. With all the leaves aged for at least two years, this cigar should be smokeable immediately.

    Appearance : [rating:4.5/5]
The appearance does not disappoint. The oily colorado wrapper reflects the sunshine nicely, gold lines on the double band fit perfectly in the color palette. The cold aroma is pretty good as well.

    Construction : [rating:3.5/5]
I wasn’t 100% satisfied by this one as I had to touch it up once and then relight it in the last third. Other than that, not much to talk about, the cigar was well-filled and provided a comfortable draw.

Partagas Serie D No. 5 Limited Edition 2008

    Flavor : [rating:4/5]
One can immediately feel the power of this smoke. The Serie D No. 5 starts out with notes of precious wood, quite rough to be honest. These dominant flavors are very strong and do not really allow to identify the sweetness in the background, I am guessing that one might recognize chocolate, vanilla and honey flavors there. The second third is more interesting as there is also some black pepper that nicely combines with the wood. The smoke is ample and delicious. The final may seem a little boring and frustrating though because the soothing sensation that you expect doesn’t really appear.

As for the eventual comparison with the Serie D No. 4, it’s not the same cigar, that’s for sure. I would say that this limited edition is slightly less powerful and less balanced than its famous brother.

    Value : [rating:3/5]
At this point, it’s hard for me to justify paying $15 for a single. I would estimate the current value of this smoke at $10. Of course, we all perfectly understand that in 3 years, when this stick will probably be in its best shape, it won’t be easy to find a box for sale.

    Overall Rating : [rating:3.5/5]
The Serie D No. 5 is definitely a true Partagas. I appreciated the honesty and the pure power of this cigar. I am pretty sure that it will smoke very nicely in a few years when the spice and the wood will mellow out and allow us to discover other flavors that this baby packs. To be revisited.

Thankfully I do have 7 of these resting in the humi. Perhaps it’s time to smoke a couple.

Just purchased 2 and currently smoking the 1st.

My man you should have let it age. 5-6 years on, and a pure delight. Full flavoured and a spiritual balance.

Shout out to Devlins in Subiaco. Perth west Australia. Joy to purchase from and returning satisfaction.

      Cheers Guys & Girls

I smoked two of these recently. The first was a major disappointment. The pre-draw was promising, but it ended up being a plugged up stogie with little smoke and issues all around.

The second sample was a relief. Excellent amounts of smoke and even burn all around. Nice strong and white ash that held right through till halfway. Balanced and even flavors of coffee and chocolate first up before shifting to aromatherapy oils and citrus and ending up with coffee again. The finish was always present, but not lingering. Power was also medium, what, after almost 4 years of aging.

Cigare viril, ample corsé et rassasiant.Equilibré malgré sa puissance, pas pour les néophytes! A apprécier avec un vieux rhum.

Out of the four boxes I smoked, about one box worth were plugged. Can’t really say it’s a waste because that’s what you get for smoking Cubans. This cigar however, has a classic Partagas flavor and it is dark and oily. Love the smoke!!!

Bought one of these recently and smoked it right away, and regretted it instantly. Definitely give these some time.

I agree, this is a must have cigar. I love Partagas, all of them.

Ditto. But here is the thing. We are paying a premium for these ELs and REs that don’t seem to be what is claimed, meaning that they are pre-aged. IMO I would rather age a box of PSD4s. This flood of supposedly premo premiums is just a marketing ploy by Habanos SA. Meanwhile they continue to cut great cigars from their lines.

I agree. I bought a box of these and the two or three I already had were rather difficult. As you very rightly said, they’ll probably need quite a lot of ageing. And indeed, rather a ’08 D4.
PS: I enjoy your website a lot
