Room 101 Cigars, the well-known luxury brand maker based in Los Angeles has recently come out with a new cigar line that is named Ichiban. With this series of cigars they will be awarding exclusivity of each vitola to only one retailer. A high honor to say the least. This third addition to the line is called the Ranfla, resembling a bit of a cross between a perfecto and a salamon, and has been awarded to Doc James Tobacconist located in Shrub Oak, NY and Mamaroneck, NY.

In addition to its exclusivity, this line is also a limited run, so if your interest is peaked after reading this it is time for you to stock up your humidors. Now on to the review…

    Review #1 by Nick Jr.

Upon receiving the cigars one notices that the stick is without question an aesthetically pleasing product. Wrapped in a decorated paper sleeve over a second twisted tissue covering I was intrigued to see what lie beneath. I was not disappointed. A silky mocha brown cigar, double banded with both an Ichiban label and a Doc James one. A very appealing and upscale look. It pre-light aroma was one that made me expect to experience deep floral notes and a bit of semi-sweet chocolate. After a quick guillotine cut and a dry draw I once again got a sense of sweetness that I hoped would be a part of the Ichiban Ranfla experience.

Upon lighting, one must have a little patience with this vitola. It burns just like a Salomon and needs a few minutes to reach the wider ring gauge to open up both flavor and draw wise. It only took about two minutes for this to happen and when it did it produced volumes of smoke. Its initial flavors produced tastes of an earthy floral type. Very interesting and complex.

Moving through to the halfway point the profile kept it floral notes but added a bit of that sweetness that I had been hoping for. Very pleasant and not overpowering. You will notice by this point during the experience that there is a lot more going on with this cigar. It was hard for me to label what I was tasting, and the closest that I can come up with is that there is a sun dried element going on. Enjoyable and unique!

On the finish the cigar became a fuller bodied treat putting forth hints of spice, mocha and espresso. That very interesting sun dried flavor amplified itself, and this very complex and interesting profile carried itself right to the nub. A great cigar smoking experience!

    Review #2 by Nick, Sr.

This stick immediately struck a positive first impression… namely, it “looked” great in terms of its wrapping. I recall thinking that I would be proud to torch the Ranfla amongst my cigar smoking friends.

First draw was outstandingly smooth and full. Through the first third… the cigar yielded a sweet and slight cocoa taste.

Then for the better part of an hour, she burned cool with no bitter flavors. I anxiously awaited the final 25%, hoping for whatever the cigar gods held in wait for me.

Shortly thereafter, I am happy to report that the finale was everything I had hoped for; full bodied and with a very pleasant and cool aftertaste.

Worthy of note, the stick burned evenly with little or no canoeing.

A great cigar well worth its price.
