El Viejo Continente Classic Maximus. A few years ago the Spanish cigar agent Daniel Guerrero decided to take it a step further. A brand of his own. That brand is El Viejo Continente, although he’s also the mastermind behind The Circus cigars. At first in a collaboration with American Caribbean Cigars in Esteli, but now Guerrero has a factory himself. The El Viejo Continente Cigar Factory, also in Esteli. This is the El Viejo Continente Classic. The first blend for the brand. It features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan tobaccos. There are several sizes available in this blend. This 6¼x60 Maximus was a gift from Daniel Guerrero during one of the Intertabac trade shows and has been aging in the humidor since 2019. These cigars are budget-friendly as the price in Germany is only €6.95.

The review
This cigar is impressive. A dark, almost Maduro-looking wrapper. Oily, with one thick vein-like scar on the face of a movie gangster. Then a yellow band with an old school map, a cloth foot band. The cigar has a nice bounce on the touch. The head is perfect. The aroma is strong, charred wood, manure, and barnyard come to mind.
The cold draw is fine with a spicy and oily hay flavor. When there is coffee with the right amount of bitterness, sweetness, and acidity. Pretty quickly some leather, green spices, and nuts join the flavor party. All smooth and in balance with each other. The flavors are nice, smooth but feel a bit muted. Like there is an explosion in flavor and strength right around the corner. There is some soil, cedar, leather, white pepper, and a hint of sweetness. The pepper slowly grows, but the cigar remains nice to retrohale. The retrohale reveals a bit more of the cedar.
After a third, the cedar turns into oak and the cigar gets more strength. There is also some leather. The mouthfeel is dry. There is some pepper and spice as well. These flavors all stick around for a long time, without a lot of evolution. But since the flavors are in balance and pleasant, that is not much of a problem. The final third has way more pepper and a little more sweetness. Combined with the leather, wood, and soil. The cigar gains in strength. Coffee makes a comeback too.
The draw is perfect. The exact right amount of airflow. And that helps with the good amount of blueish smoke. The burn is good. The cigar starts medium in body but grows to medium-full. The flavors are medium-full all along. The smoke time is three hours and thirty minutes.
