   Diamond Crown No 4. By now a classic and a size that doesn’t raise any eyebrows. But when J.C. Newman Cigar Company launched the Diamond Crown line, people called them crazy. A line with cigars that all had a 54 ring gauge, who would smoke such jawbreakers? And it’s only 25 years ago, now we live in a time where 54 is middle of the road. Cigars with ring gauges of 60 to 70 are popular, and even a cigar with an 80 ring gauge does not shock anymore. Times have changed, and if it’s for the better? It depends on who you ask.

   This Diamond Crown No.4 measures 5½x54. As all Dominican cigars from the J.C. Newman Cigar Company, it is made at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. With a specially fermented Connecticut Shade wrapper from Connecticut, United States. The binder comes from the Dominican Republic. The exact blend of the filler tobacco is undisclosed. J.C. Newman says it’s a selection of 5 different fillers from the Caribbean and Central America.

   The review

   The wrapper is Connecticut Shade and they are never the best-looking cigars. This time the wrapper is a bit yellowish-brown with thin veins. The triple cap is perfect though. The cigar stems from the mid-1990s yet the ring looks older than that. Dated with brown, red, and gold. The crown in the middle has lots of details though. Both J.C. Newman Cigar Company and Tabacalera A. Fuente are mentioned on the ring. The construction feels good. The aroma is mild, barnyard and hay.

   The cold draw is good and has a dry hay flavor. The first puffs are very dry. Wood, soil, leather, coffee, and hay. With a hint of white pepper. Coffee slowly gets a bit stronger. There is also a bit of sweetness. The cigar is easy to retrohale since it’s smooth and soft. The flavor then changes to straw and dry leaves with a little citrus and sweetness. The mouthfeel is very dry. The end of the first third marks dry leather with some spice.

   The second third starts with a sweetness and a very dry nutty flavor. There is a faint classic Connecticut Shade flavor, that musty old book aroma. But it is very mild, and thus acceptable. Halfway there is a mild coffee flavor with some leather and some sweetness. Later there is a licorice flavor as well as the cigar picks up some strength and pepper. The end has a bit more pepper, but it remains a smooth cigar. The balance is never off. 

   The draw is fantastic and that helps to create a lot of thick, white smoke. The ash is light in color and quite dense. The burn is good, slow, and straight. This cigar is medium in body and flavor. It is a classic and for a good reason. If you love Connecticut Shade wrappers, this is a must-try. And if you dislike Connecticut Shade cigars, try this, as it’s enjoyable even if that type of wrapper is not your cup of tea. The smoke time is two and a half hours.
