I personally love most of the Partagas line. The earthy funky character these cigars are known by is a love of mine and when I saw this contest, this was the first cigar that came to mind. I have been able to acquire these for about $4.00 a piece and I smoke a little slow so these usually last me about an hour, which in my eyes makes this a perfect candidate to review. I like to age these a little as they mellow out in the last third but these usually don’t last too long and i smoke my boxes quite fast. However I held onto this one for about 7 months and was nicely rewarded. I tend to purchase these quite a bit as most I have had have few, if any draw issues. I only had one of these with a tight draw out of my last box and it was workable, nothing to complain too much about. As a matter of fact my only real complaints with these are I wish the smoking time was longer and I have had a few that just would not let the bands come off. I personally take every band off my cigar before I cut and light it but this one was different. I even waited until the burn almost hit the band hoping the glue would loosen with the heat and I still struggled with getting it off. With that said, enough of my rambling and on with the review.
This particular cigar was a nice dark brown, with a decent cap and firm to the touch. Most of these from the boxes I have purchased look and feel this way. It had very few veins and the few there were, were rather small. The cap clipped nicely with my guillotine, my cutter of choice, and the pre draw was not too firm with some spice and cocoa. Upon lighting my palate was greeted with lots of spice and hay and this continued through the first third of the cigar. It started out rather mild and cool but things soon changed.
With the second third of the cigar things started to change and it became rather tasty. I started picking up notes of wood and leather, quite profound notes of leather I might add with earth and the intensity kicked up to a nice medium body. The spice disappeared almost entirely by the middle and allowed the wood and leather to shine. I particularly love this intermingling and it stays smooth and a little creamy throughout this.
By the time I reached the final third, things changed again and the cigar starts to shine. The cigar picked up in body some more but was still shy of full bodied. The spice returns a bit, but is by no means overpowering like the first third. It stays in the background and is rather pleasant this way. The wood and leather pick up but the cocoa returns and I am delighted by profound notes of roasted coffee. The coffee comes and goes through the rest of the cigar but the wood and leather are in the foreground. I’ve noticed the coffee is something new and is a result of a the aging. If left longer in the humidor I imagine this would intensify and will be testing this theory with my next box as I love the coffee in these. As I reach the end however the finish turns a little toasty, partly because I started smoking this a little faster I’m sure, and begins to over power all the other flavors. It was at this point that I set the nub down as my lips and fingers started to get a little warm.
As cheap as these are and as well as they age, these are one of my favorite cheap smokes. for the price, complexity and size of these they provide an hour of pure enjoyment. These always seem to keep me interested, constantly adding things to its flavor profile. These have and always will remain a staple and I encourage EVERYONE to pick up a few these and give them a shot. Simply put, for the price… these can’t be beat.

Great review. Just one thing to add: I have found there’s usually a nice kick at the end. A great way to finish off a quick lunch break smoke and go back to work.

Thanks much. I love the shorts too. I recently just blew through an ’09 box. They could have used some age but I just didn’t want to wait. Those are too good to hold on to.
