Bolivar is a classic when it comes to Cuban brands. One of the best-known brands and well praised under the aficionados. It’s not the biggest brand, that’s Cohiba, but amongst true cigar smokers, Bolivar has a reputation that is equal or better.
In 2014, the brand was chosen for one of the Edicion Limitada cigars. Habanos went for the 5½x48 Corona Extra vitola. And the cigar got the name Bolivar Super Coronas Edicion Limitada 2014

The review
It is a good looking cigar with a perfect triple cap. The shade of the wrapper compliments the classic Bolivar ring. And the gold of that ring ties in well with the Edicion Limitada 2014 secondary ring. The wrapper has no real veins. The cigar has been aging for a few years but still has a mild ammonia aroma underneath a hay smell.
The cold draw is tight, an issue that happens more often with Cuban cigars. And it’s one of the comments we have on the current state of Cuban cigars. Once lit, the cigar has a sweet coffee and leather taste, classic Cuban. The leather and sweetness are dominant but on the background, there are minty greens like lemon basil, white pepper, fruity citrus, and fresh green herbs. Very complex and deep. Halfway the dominant flavor is still leather but with an earthiness to it. There’s also some spice, hazelnuts and the fruity citrus sourness, like mild raspberry vinegar. All of a sudden roasted coffee beans show up, accompanied by a strong dose of chocolate and for a few puffs also a faint vanilla aroma. The leather is getting stronger and more pronounced while the pepper changes from white pepper to red pepper. In the final third, pepper takes over the cigar with cocoa and roasted coffee beans on the background.
The draw is tight, and that affects the score. It also affects the smoke, which affects the score too. Without those issues, this would have been a 93 cigar since the flavors are amazing. The ash is nice and firm, the cigar is very complex. The smoke time is two hours and twenty-five minutes.
