Romeo y Julieta No. 2 (Tubo)

    Origin : CubaRomeo y Julieta
    Format : Petit Corona
    Size : 129 x 16.67 mm
    Ring : 42
    Weight : 8,46 g
    Hand-Made
    Price : ~5€ each

I am having some tough luck with petit coronas recently. First, the disappointing RASCC and now the pale and hardly memorable Romeo y Julieta No. 2. Not to mention that one of the cigars was moldy. I guess it’s time to get back to my beloved robustos…

    Appearance : [rating:3/5]
The tubo looks good, all right, but the stick itself is not very attractive. The wrapper is of average quality; I often found some discolorations such as green patches seen on the picture below. Although it is said that these green spots do not affect the flavor, they sure distract you.

Romeo y Julieta No. 2 (Tubo)
    Construction : [rating:3/5]
Very, very mediocre. The draw was much tighter than I would have liked and the burn always needed a few corrections.

    Flavor : [rating:3.5/5]
As for the flavor, the Romeo y Julieta No. 2 left a dubious impression. At times, it was a very pleasant cigar with delicious notes of nuts, cedar and chocolate. Unforunately, very often a disagreeable herbacious flavor appeared to spoil my pleasure. In some sticks, it was present from start to finish, in others it only caught up on me in the very end. Overall, I find that you can’t really count on this stogie.

    Value : [rating:3/5]
Even under 5€, I find these a little overpriced. There are better deals out there, in particular Bolivar Bonitas and Partagas Mille Fleurs.

    Overall Rating : [rating:overall/5]
I would not recommend this cigar. The most positive aspect of the RyJ No. 2 is its beautiful, stylish tube – which makes it a good gift item. Unfortunately, the quality varies very much and I am reluctant to offer this cigar to a friend if I know that it might be moldy or badly constructed. I am afraid I will not buy them again.

Ordered my favourite RyJ2 tubos cigars from this site for the first time, was unsure at first but took a leap. I found that the best thing for them was to remove the cap from the tubos before storing them in my humidor, and smoke them once they have had a couple of weeks to settle. The delivery from the web site was as quick as promised, and the cigars were exceptional. I have only had 1 tightie amongst the many I have smoked over time. Will definitely be recommending FCC to my fellow cigar smokers, and will be back to order again in the near future.

I’ve been smoking R y J No 1 for years now. The occasional green coloring and tight wrap is a pity, hence I agree it’s not a good gift idea. Rather smoke them myself, for this low price it’s an unpretentious, solid little several-times-a-day cigar. When you hit a winner (more often than not) it’s delicious.

I am new to Cigars, however, have smoked several Cubans in Belize. I find this review of the Romeo No. 2 to be RIGHT ON with my evaluation. Smoked one last night, really nothing special. The reason I looked up this review was to see if I was missing something about this cigar, nice to know that I am not. Will not buy again, prefer my Fuente’s!

I found my Romeo y Julieta No. 2. quite enjoyable but I had to return my first one.. It was covered with mold . I felt funny leaving it back. But you should always open up the cigar container and inspect it thoroughly. I thought it was “bloom” but the cigar is not that old to form “Bloom”.. Give it 2 out of 5.. ;)_:

I have found that generally tubed Cuban cigars lack the quality of boxed individuals. In respect to the no2 petit coronas I have smoked maybe four, when access to alternatives has been unavailable, and in all honesty have never found one of any interest. I smoke Montecristo, Belicosos, Monte open eagle and diplimatico, Pataga any of the Cuban pyramides or decent size robusto. These are a much much better investment to my mind! Still find Cubans the best. DHL

I tried R&J #2, #3, Vintage ’99 but they were all wrapped really tight, so I had to reignite them few times before I threw them to the garbage. Taste is nothing special either.

I’ve had one of these for a while, recently decided to give it a shot. I too was quite suprised when I saw the cigar a bit moldy. The burn was rather uneven, taste was not too bad for me, aroma was quite pleasant. Still, at this price range I’d go for Bolivar Bonitas.

I am new to the cigar world and have tried 5 cigars so far. Trying for a one a week treat but getting hard to not want to try more. I bought one of these cigars to test for possible gifts (expecting my first boy in late Feb). Have read and tried to educate myself but do try to keep clear of too many reviews or opinions until I try it for myself. That being said I liked this choice very much. Nice and firm to the touch (even wife said it was a pleasant smell). Burned very even and easy to draw. Loved the hint of chocolate and mild taste that it gave me as a beginner. Left me with a nice lingering taste. It was gladly worth it for sure. Will definitely take heed of buying them in boxes if it seems quality is an issue. Anyone with any other suggestions out there please pass them along.

Mine were bought as legally as you can in France 🙂 I try to avoid contraband cigars.

    • BaldLea

Seems I got lucky as my RyJ 2 has a perfect wrapper; certainly no discolouration. Burn was shaky to start with but corrected itself. Draw was OK but agree with others about the flavour being nothing special.

Maybe your contraband cigars are a bit dodgy – I bought mine legally here in th UK 🙂

I agree with your tasting notes…herbacious is definitely a good word for this cigar. No thanks! Mine was made well though

On those rare occasions when one gets contraband, you really make an effort to enjoy it, no matter how sub-par the contraband may be. I really tried to like the RyJ no. 2, but between fighting with the draw and burn, and the lack of (angelic choir singing) flavor, I just couldn’t love it. I followed the no. 2 up with a Tatuaje Havana VI, which is a marvelous smoke, and was satisfied.

I thought it was an ok cigar, perhaps a little overrated by some other reviews. I had a good draw and a decent burn, mostly corrected by itself. Not much flavor which to me was very disappointing. Tried aging some for different periods of time and made little difference if any. Partagas Mille Fleurs are way, way better cigars. However, this R&J makes a pretty good daytime cigar, in my opinion. A little overpriced for that, cost $140 US in duty free for a box of 25. The mentioned Partagas is half the price…

A touch bog-standard. And almost always ALWAYS get a really green, uneven wrapper. Must be a set of novice torcedors handling production of these. It’s the kind you see stuffed next to the cigarettes in news stands, and super markets…

I could not agree more with the reviewer’s comments. The wrapper looks dull, has discolorations sometimes, and this cigar suffers, very often, from being wrapped too tight. I have smoked fairly good ones, it’s true, but the problems with the draw are disturbingly frequent. Yesterday I tried to smoke one, but ended up beaten by the tremendous effort. Had to give up after having smoked only half of it. I just couldn’t get a decent amount of smoke in my mouth. It’s impossible to say anything about the taste under these conditions! I have given up on them, unfortunately.

Just as an afterthought for anyone interested in R&Js, the Petit Julietas are great, though sometimes suffer from a tight draw. I’m not up to doing a worthwhile review so if anyone would like to oblige…

    • andrewshere

Good review. I’ve had the same experience with these No.2s. The green spots aren’t mold, but disconcerting all the same. Variable flavours from stick to stick, and I’ve definitely had that herbaceous flavour too. I had an Upmann Coronas Junior shortly after one of these R&Js and it had much better flavour – they’re pretty consistent too.

    • nazarm

I haven’t tried the No.2, But I just had a couple of the No.3’s and I had the same issues with them. Both were moldy and poorly constructed.

Before you give up on the petit corona…have you tried the HdM PC?

      Excellent?
