The new Romeo y Julieta Petit Royale, also introducing a brand new half-Churchill vitola from Habanos, is a superb offering of a Cuban short-smoke entr’acto, offering both rich and changing flavour in an excellent full-bodied little package. This satisfying stick seems destined to make many friends, and may well spark a trend in 47 ring gauge half-Churchills as a preferred short-smoke cigar sizing.

It’s fitting that Habanos would introduce a half-Churchill in the Romeo y Julieta line, as RyJ is a historic Cuban cigar marque that the real Winston Churchill himself often favoured.

This stick was quite near the precise catalogued tick in size, visibly just a hair thicker than the 46 ring gauge Vegueros Mañanita in my humidor. Its wrapper was not perfect, a bit rustic, as ol’ Winnie might have liked, but cigar texture was wonderful, just soft enough. Cold aroma was sweet and floral. Pre-draw after punching had spice and suggested baking bread and cocoa.

A very easy draw here, a bit too easy at times, this stick could be rather smoky. Initial flavour was cedar with floral notes, and a bit of that high quality positive bitterness RyJ sticks can have, like an Italian apertif. What also came in quickly was a bit of harshness, a fire in the back of the throat, as erupted a few times in the smoke, only very briefly, and so seeming to give the cigar character, more than being bothersome.

This Petit Royale continually had lots of flavour, tho every few puffs the flavour focus could change within the pleasing RyJ range. Along with generally good flavour being nearly always there, there were moments of flavour bursts that were just perfect. This short cigar was a great deal of fun and never dull.

Toward the end of the first third, was one of those bursts, with a combination of walnut and cream. The second third began with more cedar, then after a brief semi-harsh episode, there was full-flavoured wood and walnut, and a touch of bittersweet cocoa. The middle 3rd also introduced some fruit flavour, and other varieties of nuttiness. The fruit sense morphed into a pleasing bitter sense of fruit seed and fruit rind.

In the final third was a little sourness from the fruit, another brief harsh episode, as well as some great flavour bursts recapping all of the above. Toward the end, did not want to go deep into the nub, but felt very satisfied with the cigar as a whole.

Burn was uneven tho not quick, the ash quite black-ish, holding a good long time tho in a bent shape. Flavour was not so subtle but always strong; this is a great short cigar with a strong drink. And this was a heady cigar, seemed a bit stronger than the RyJ ‘medium’ designation by Habanos.

For myself in a Cuban short entr’acto, I would still overall prefer the Montecristo Media Corona (44 x 90mm), with its subtler and sweeter flavours. For many tho, I think this Romeo y Julieta Petit Royale half-Churchill, would be their choice, with its bigger punch in both flavour and strength, and its Churchillian thickness in 47 ring.

With weather (either cold or rain) in UK challenging cigar smokers, I’ve become more of a fan of “shorter format”cigars. Look forward to trying this RyJ vitola.
