Weekly news week 45 2020. A week that started with a tribute to one of the biggest legends we have in the cigar industry. The only man honored with a brand named after him by Habanos. No other than the late, and great, Alejandro Robaina. The tobacco farmer who continuously produced the best and most premium tobacco for the production of Cuban cigars. And there is also bad and sad news. Nicaragua and Honduras are flooded severely by Hurricane Eta. The tropical storm is now heading towards Cuba. Plus Stefan Bastiaenssens, international sales manager of J.C. Newman passed away.

Ministry of Cigars - Industry legend Alejandro Robaina

The two reviews of this week are from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. One from the Blue Star Factory. That is the factory of Abe Flores, better known as the PDR Factory. Besides his own brands, Flores also makes a select number of private labels. The Bugatti Ambassador is one of those private labels. We reviewed the Robusto. And yesterday We published a review of the Condega Serie F Mini Robusto. A budget-friendly cigar hailing from Nicaragua. But the brand is Spanish owned and it is making waves since introduced internationally. A few months ago, we also reviewed Hand Rolled: a film about cigars. The documentary is now available on DVD. Previously it was only available digitally.

Habanos and other news

There is a lot of news coming from Cuba this week. And a lot of that news is about the H. Upmann brand. The new vitola in the Habanos Linea Retro series is from H. Upmann. It’s a regalia and joins Partagas and Romeo y Julieta in the series. The H. Upmann Magnum 56 in a beautiful jar is heading to select retailers as well. The jar is from the 2019 Travel & Duty-Free program, but with travel so restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the jar is sold through retailers as well. And then there is a new vitola, the Connoisseur No.2. It is going to debut in a virtual event next month, but then it’s always the question of when it will be available for retailers and consumers. Habanos is known for its delays. But that’s not all the news from Habanos. Kaliman Caribe, the exclusive distributor for Habanos in Bulgaria, opens a Habanos Specialist shop at the Hyatt Regency in Sofia. And they introduce the Quai d’Orsay Senadores in their territory. Intertabak, the exclusive distributor of Habanos in Switzerland, acquired a few master cases of Andorra regional editions cigars to be distributed to Swiss retailers.

Villiger releases the 2020 Anniversary. A tribute to two of the important people in Villiger history. Toscano is also releasing a limited edition, Il Moro 2020. Just like the Caldwell Cigar Company. Davidoff is taking it a step further. They not only release a limited edition Year of the Ox cigar but also Year of the Ox pipe tobacco and accessory sets.

Other news

The Netherlands is losing two landmark tobacconists with a long history. Paul de Wilde in Amersfoort and the century-old Jansen Quicken in Roermond call it quits at the end of this year. It’s safe to say that they won’t be among the 40 Dutch retailers that will get the new A.J. Fernandez Blend 15 cigars. J.C. Newman released a series of videos about the haunting of J.C. Newman. And the brand new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport gets a cigar lounge. Herzog Zigarren is operating the Zeitgeist lounge. This was the weekly news of Week 45, 2020.
