The vibrant cigar scene of Kuala Lumpur part 2. Earlier this year, we visited the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur for the first time. And we fell in love with the place. The food is amazing, the city has a great vibe, friendly people but mostly the cigar scene is amazing. There is an abundance of lounges, the selection of cigars available in Malaysia might be the best in South East Asia and the prices are decent.

When we visited Kuala Lumpur earlier this year, we wrote an article about some of the lounges that we visited. But since then, several new lounges opened. So when we were invited to the opening of the Cohiba Atmosphere we took the opportunity to revisit some of those. We went to Cigar Malaysia, Cigar Bar KL and The Cabinet. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit our friend Ray at his shop Cigars Lounge, as it’s always a pleasure to sit down with Ray for a cigar. We have done so in four different countries on two continents so far, so our apologies to Ray for not being able to drop by.

On this, short trip, we ventured out of the city center to the surrounding areas to visit a few lounges that were opened since we last visited Kuala Lumpur. And we found a hidden gem, a slick modern cigar lounge, a cozy lounge based after a famous English club, and the luxurious Cohiba Atmosphere.

Cohiba Atmosphere

The Cohiba Atmosphere is located in an area where you won’t expect a cigar lounge. It’s in an industrial area and the building looks like an ordinary warehouse on the outside, except for the large Cohiba Atmosphere logo. The lounge is owned and operated by Asiaeuro wines & spirits, one of Asia’s largest distributors of water and alcoholic beverages. And no money was spared to renovate the building. The ground floor reminded us of a posh 5-star hotel, with a reception, and an undeniable wow factor. The second floor has a beautiful, fully stocked bar with plenty of armchairs and comfortable sofas to fit approximately forty people. The humidor is large and stocked with the best that Cuba has to offer. Since it’s a Habanos licensed concept, the Cohiba Atmosphere stocks some very rare, hard to find Cuban cigars. The lounge also offers a boardroom for meetings, a few private rooms and a huge karaoke room which members can book. Those are all located on the third floor.

The Duke Cigars

This beautiful lounge is located in Republik, a beautiful yet small mall in Kuala Lumpur. The owners were inspired by the famous private club Annabel’s of Mayfair in London. Since it’s impossible to get into that club, they decided to build their version. The wallpaper was imported from the United Kingdom for example, and gives the lounge it’s own signature style. The large walk-in humidor has a great selection of both Cuban and New World cigars. Owner Afzan Helmy told us that the goal is to carry about 400 facings with currently three-quarters of that number achieved. The lounge can sit a little over 30 cigar smokers comfortably. The Duke doesn’t have a liquor license, yet you can bring your own if you buy cigars from the humidor. They do sell a selection of beers.

Fidel’s room

A hidden gem, that’s the best way to describe this cigar room at the five star Palace of the Golden Horses. The smoke room is all you would expect from a posh hotel such as the Palace of the Golden Horses. It looks like a classic English library. Chesterfield furniture, marble tables. There are 14 seats for the guests and beautiful decor. A high, curved ceiling, a small balcony with a few more seats. A picture of Fidel Castro on the wall, as the lounge, is named after the tyrant dictator. They offer a small selection of both Cuban and New World cigars from a small humidor. The bar sells all kinds of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. But the bonus is the fully equipped barbershop next door, and the shoeshine station in the lounge. You can have your shoes polished while enjoying a premium cigar.

The Humidor Malaysia

In a brand new shopping complex, in between empty shop units, you will find The Humidor Malaysia. The Humidor Malaysia is located in the government town Putrajaya and the rules are stricter than in Kuala Lumpur. So the lounge has no liquor license and can’t use the words tobacco or cigar in the name. The lounge has its own style with modern art on the wall. The paintings are for sale, so the location doubles as an art gallery. There are a few Chesterfield sofas both in classic and in odd colors like a golden Chesterfield. The armchairs are contemporary and bright colored. There’s room for about 30 cigar lovers inside and 8 more seats on the balcony. The large humidor is stocked with a good selection of cigars from Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. The Humidor Malaysia pairs unexpected food items with cigars during their frequent events.
