Jember tobacco region

Indonesia produces a lot of tobacco. Most of the tobacco is used for dry-cured shortfiller cigars which are very popular all over Europe. Only a small percentage of tobacco is used for premium handmade cigars. And Jember is the largest tobacco-growing region of Indonesia. The Jember tobacco export for 2018 has a value of approximately 108 million US dollars. Tobacco is very important for the region, that’s why the local authorities see the event as an icon for the district of Jember. The authorities are determined to make the Jember, City of Cigar Indonesia an annual event. It will help with the aspiration to increase tourism by 2%.

Because the event is supported by the local government, the official opening was done by the Head of Dewan, Perwakilan Daerah (House of District Representatives). The head of the event committee, IR. H. Febrian Ananta Kahar is also the director of the production for Bin Cigars. He is the son of the founder and president director Hj Abd Kahar Muzakir. The location of the event, the Sukorambi Botanical Garden is part of the family property.

The main players in the cigar industry of Jember are the local producers PT Boss Image Nusantara (BIN Cigar) and PT Mangli Djaya Raya (MDR). And two foreign multinationals, Villager and Burger Soehne Ag.

The event

The event started at 6 pm and lasted until the morning. There was live music from a traditional Indonesian band. The event included a live cigar rolling demonstration from MDR and a long ash competition. The rest of the activities to entertain the guests included a Jember fashion carnival and more. Both MDR and BIN Cigar had booths to promote their products.

The local government and the organizers of the Jember, City of Cigar Indonesia festival hope that the festival will attract more aficionados from all over the world. The goal is to make it the biggest cigar event in South East Asia. During the event, BIN Cigar signed a distribution agreement with both Cigar Malaysia and the Pacific Cigar Company. With those agreements, the brand will be distributed in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore.
