The second Habanos Edicion Limitada will be released tonight. It’s the Quai d’Orsay Senadores, a 6⅛x48 Grand Corona aka Hermosos #2. The cigar will be released at a party in Paris. On a yacht sailing along the river Seine. If you’re lucky to have an invitation, the cruise departs from Port Henri VI around 8 PM. According to Habanos, the distribution of the Quai d’Orsay Senadores Edicion Limitada will start ’soon after the release party’ without mentioning a hard date.

Three Edicion Limitadas

At the most recent Habanos festival, in February of this year, three new limited editions were shown. Those were the Montecristo Supremo, this Quai d’Orsay Senadores, and the Ramon Allones Allones No. 2 belicoso. The Montecristo Supremo was released in June, during a party in Italy. When the third Edicion Limitada of 2019 will be released is still a mystery. Just like the location of the party.

Quai d’Orsay history

It is suiting that Paris is the place to launch the cigar, as the brand was released in 1974 exclusively for the French market. It’s even named after a street in the country’s capital Paris. The brand was created on request of Valéry Giscard, the French president at the time. He said that France was known for it’s luxury products, yet there was no French cigar. So a cigar was made from African leaves from Cameroon, and it was machine made. But the French tobacco monopolist Seita (which later merged with the Spanish monopolist Tabacalera into Altadis) wanted to do better. To them, luxury meant Cuban tobacco and hand made. They reached out to the Cuban government and the rest is history.

The brand slowly saw all the vitolas being discontinued in the 2000s. And it was deemed to disappear when Habanos decided to turn Quai d’Orsay into a global brand, with new sizes and new packaging. Only one original size made the cut, the 5⅝x42 Coronas (Claro). But the two newly introduced sizes, Quai d’Orsay 50 and 54 are received well by the Habanos fans worldwide and the brand seems to be more alive than ever.
