Puro Sabor 2021 canceled. The 9th edition of the Nicaraguan Cigar Festival is off the books. That’s due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. The festival normally takes place in late January. The situation with the covid-19 pandemic is too uncertain to pursue further steps in organizing the festival. Visitors from more than 21 countries attended the 2020 edition of the festival.
Cancelation
It’s not the first time that the Nicaraguan Chamber of Tobacco Growers has to cancel the event. The call was made to cancel the 2019 Puro Sabor Nicaraguan Cigar Festival due to social unrest. Due to a variety of reasons, there was no festival in 2012 and 2013 either.
“Our priority is the care we want to give to our people in the factories and to the people who would have visited us for the festival. The evolution of COVID-19 is still unpredictable, so we believe we have made the best decision,” Claudio Sgroi, president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Tobacco Growers explains. “It is a decision discussed in-depth and made consciously by all members of the Chamber. “It is a responsible and conscious measure,” Sgroi continues.
“The cancellation of the festival does not mean that we are inactive”, says Sgroi, “on the contrary. We are preparing for the next few month’s virtual factory tours and personalized virtual masterclasses with experts and manufacturers of the most prestigious Nicaraguan brands.

The premium tobacco industry employs more than 40,000 people directly. To safeguard their health during the pandemic, tobacco factories have conducted prevention and education campaigns, in addition to adopting strict prevention measures at their facilities. These include establishing hand washing and disinfection stations at the entrance of the factories, mandatory use of masks, and maintaining social distancing.
The Nicaraguan Chamber of Tobacco is an organization that represents the interests of Nicaragua’s most important tobacco and cigar producers. Its 28 members represent 95% of the total national production of tobacco and cigars.
In the last decade, Nicaragua stands out as one of the largest producers and the main exporter of premium tobacco and cigars in the world. Different brands, manufactured in Nicaragua, are recognized by specialized magazines and international experts as the best in the world.
