Oliva celebrates 135 years of tobacco history. Back in 1886, Melanio Oliva kicked off a family history that would last for more than a century. It was that year where he planted his first tobacco seeds. He could not foresee that the family name would be one of the big names 135 years later. But it is. Oliva Cigars is renowned worldwide. And Melanio Oliva is not forgotten, his name is on the most popular of all Oliva Cigars, the Oliva Melanio. The figurado was the best cigar of the year in 2014 according to Cigar Aficionado.

Back then, the Oliva family was still living in Pinar del Rio, the famous tobacco-growing region of Cuba. But after the revolution in 1959, and the brutalities of the Castro regime, the family fled to the United States. The tobacco business got a reboot in Nicaragua and in the mid-1990s, Gilberto Oliva sr created the Oliva Cigars brand. With that, the tobacco grower also became a cigar manufacturer.

135h anniversary

In October, the Nicaraguan cigar company, now part of the Belgian J. Cortes family, will release a cigar to commemorate the 135th anniversary. For that, Oliva creates 15.000 boxes for a global release. Each box contains 12 cigars in a perfecto shape. The cigars fan out in the box, creating a beautiful sight. The box also has a picture of one of the Oliva tobacco farms in Nicaragua.

The cigars are 5½x54 Perfectos and use the same blend as the regular production Oliva Series V. That means Nicaraguan binder and filler, grown by the Oliva family, with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. The cigars come from Oliva’s own Tabolisa factory. A factory that has been renovated over the last few years.

Even though the cigars won’t ship until the final quarter of the year, visitors to the PCA Convention & Trade Show can see the cigars. There will be a box on display during the annual show from the Premium Cigar Association.
