SpecialsExploring the Timeless Allure of Onyx Reserve: A Closer Look at the Storied Dominican Cigar
Author: Inspector X
Altadis is closely related to Habanos via Tabacalera and those ties are starting to show when it comes to marketing. Habanos is selling ‘Reserva’ cigars if tobacco is just three years of age and with five years, they call it ‘gran Reserva’ while charging an outrageous price for these cigars. Three to five year old tobacco is quite normal in the world of Non-Cuban premium cigars. Altadis USA is now using the term vintage very loosely for the new Onyx Vintage Nicaragua as the wrapper is only four years old, from the 2019 wrapper and thus not vintage at all. The only difference with Habanos is that Altadis USA doesn’t charge the world for this cigar, as the suggested retail prices are around 10 USD per cigar.
The cigars are made at the factory of A.J. Fernandez with only Nicaraguan tobacco. Fernandez was also responsible for the previous Onyx cigar, the Onyx Bold. The Vintage Nicaragua comes in a 5×50 Robusto, a 6×54 Toro and a 6×60 Gordo, each in boxes of 20 cigars.
The cigars are not limited edition, as the Onyx Vintage Nicaragua will start tapping into other harvests when the tobacco from 2019 is depleted.
The Dominican made Onyx Reserve was launched in 2000 and was the first cigar under the Onyx brand name. It is still being produced at Tabacalera de Garcia.
Even though the word ‘vintage’ has been used very loosely in this release, Cigar Inspector X can’t wait to try this cigar as it’s made by A.J. Fernandez and the Onyx Reserva was one of his favourite cigars back in the day.
