De Oude Tijd in Utrecht is one of the oldest, still operating, tobacco retailers of The Netherlands. The shop opened more than 85 years ago and its one of the few shops that rely solely on tobacco and tobacco accessories.

The last few weeks, owners Edwin and Gerda van de Berg, have remodeled the interior of the shop with help from professional renovators. They managed to modernize the shop, and doubling the size of the walk-in humidor, which is now 12 square meters without disturbing the nostalgic feel of the store that fits with the classic facade of the shop.

Edwin van de Berg explained that expanding the humidor was a logical step to keep up with the growing demand and the expanding number of cigars available on the Dutch market. Unfortunately, the limited space of the building didn’t allow the couple to open a cigar lounge inside the shop, but on beautiful days you can sit comfortably outside the shop, enjoy a cigar and watch the people walk by.

Completely unrelated, but the shop’s Longfiller specialist Peter Gerretsen is running the quarter marathon of Rotterdam in April to raise money for Pronica, an organization that helps fund schools in Nicaragua. You can read more about it here, and sponsor him too just like we did.
