CSWC Kuala Lumpur is back on
CSWC Kuala Lumpur is back on. Again. The event was announced in the first place, but then the pandemic forced the organization to cancel all qualifiers. The Malaysian partners of the Cigar Smoking World Championship came with a plan. With a local judge and a new date, the event would take place. That got derailed when Malaysia went into a full lockdown for more than two months. Now that Malaysia is gradually opening again, a new attempt is being made.
Unico Desde 1979
On Saturday, August 15th, the qualifiers for the Cigar Smoking World Championship is taking place. Trinidad Cigar Company, the Malaysian partner for Marko Bilic and his CSWC team are hosting the event. The qualifier will take place at the Chime Cigar Lounge. The lounge is located within the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
Since the world is still battling with the corona-virus, travel is still restricted. Marko Bilic, founder of the Cigar Smoking World Championship, can’t make an appearance. But instead, Samuel Spurr aka Unico Desde 1979 will be the host and judge. Spurr, an Australian ex-pat in Malaysia, is a long time writer for Cigar Journal. Last year, Spurr was involved in the organization as well. And he was a contender in the competition. We had one goal when entering the 2019 qualifier. That was to beat Spurr, and we did. We finished fourth, just shy from the podium.
This year Spurr can’t compete as he is the juror. So no side-bets between Cigar Journal and us this time. Sam, you still owe us dinner. If we get to compete is still a question. For now, travel restrictions make it impossible for us to visit Malaysia. But there is talk about lifting those restrictions.
For the first time, the competition will be with the brand new Rocky Patel CSWC blend. In the previous decade, other brands were used. Mainly Montecristo and Macanudo. But for the next few years, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars is the official supplier for the CSWC cigars.
