In the vibrant spirit of camaraderie forged over cigars in New York City, a quartet of friends has ventured into the world of cigar craftsmanship, birthing their brand, Civil Pleasures. The inaugural release, CP1, a 5 x 50 box-pressed robusto, signals the brand’s entrance into the industry. The cigar features a criollo-seed wrapper cultivated in Jalapa, Nicaragua, enveloping a Dominican binder and a blend of five-year-old filler tobaccos sourced from Nicaragua’s Condega, Estelí, and Jalapa regions. Joya de Nicaragua, renowned for its expertise, is the manufacturing partner for the CP1, which is priced at an MSRP of $30.

The driving force behind Civil Pleasures comprises Sean Dorsey, Sharif Khalje, Cody Min, and Jesse Roth, individuals brought together by their shared passion for cigars during their time in New York City. Although lacking backgrounds in the cigar business, their conviction in the profound connections formed through cigars propelled them to embark on their brand journey.

Sean Dorsey, CEO of Civil Pleasures, expressed their inspiration, stating, “The overwhelming interest and support that emerged from these events and amongst our community inspired us to create our own, independent brand, Civil Pleasures.” Working closely with Joya de Nicaragua’s master blenders, the result is CP1, a cigar designed to appeal to both beginners and enthusiasts, with the promise that this release is just the beginning of their offerings.

Civil Pleasures officially introduced its cigars last month, and CP1 is currently available at select retailers in New York and New Jersey. Juan Ignacio Martínez, Executive President of Joya de Nicaragua, commended Civil Pleasures for its unique style and innovative approach to cigar enjoyment, noting that they have crafted not just a cigar but an entire experience. Martínez highlighted that Civil Pleasures brings a new vibe to a new generation of cigar smokers, blending luxury with accessibility.

Beyond the cigars themselves, Civil Pleasures adopts a modern aesthetic, diverging from the conventional look of many cigar brands. The brand enlisted photographer Gogy Esparza to capture its essence in the first brand campaign. Esparza’s lens focused on capturing the diverse New York personalities in the hospitality, art, and fashion scenes, including figures such as Scarr Pimentel of Scarr’s Pizza, Luc Levy of Cafe Gitane, Maxwell Osborne of anOnlyChild, and photographer Lucka Ngo Gogy. The visual narrative complements Civil Pleasures’ mission to offer not just cigars but an entire lifestyle experience.
