Canteros adds Oscar Valladares cigars to their portfolio. The New Zealand distributor and retailer confirmed that 2012, Altar Q, Leaf, The Oscar, Big Johnny, My Way, and Ceniceros are added.

Valladares isn’t born into the industry. He became a driver for Rocky Patel Premium Cigars in his native Honduras. Immediately he fell in love with tobacco. His thirst for knowledge led Patel to hire Valladares full time in the quality control department. That ultimately led to Oscar Valladares cigars and his own factory in 2012.

Inspired by the Mayan culture, Valladares created a cigar for the turning point in 2012. That was an important day in Mayan culture and the end of a cycle. Some people expected the world to end. Valladares created a cigar for the event, and instead of cellophane, he used unfermented tobacco to protect the cigar. That’s the way the Mayans would have done it. That was a huge success. And the cigar got introduced in the United States.

The distributor, and owner of a tobacco shop, Island Jim Robinson asked for a private label with the same packaging. That was the final push that Valladares needed to start his own factory. With help from his brother Hector and master blender Byron Duarte.

The Leaf by Oscar was an overnight success, not only because of the packaging.

And Oscar became one of the rising stars in the cigar industry. Now he’s not only producing cigars. But Valladares is also cultivating tobacco, and growing it in Copan. And he’s been noticed globally. The cigars from Oscar are distributed to countries all over the world. In Europe, Asia and the Pacific including New Zealand.
