SpecialsA cigar to support fallen heroes’ families
Author: Inspector Z
A cigar to support fallen heroes’ families. More precisely, to support families of the 412 brave men and women who gave their lives rescuing others. Robert Caldwell from Caldwell Cigars, Tony Bellato from La Barba Cigars, Juan Cancel, and Kevin Keithan from Protocol cigars teamed up with artist Jaclyn Sears for ONE. One is part of the Lost & Found series, a collaboration between Caldwell and Bellato.
The proceeds of this limited edition cigars are donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The foundation helps to pay off mortgages of families of the fallen first responders. It also runs a mobile 9/11 memorial exhibit.
Honoring the heroes
“In the continued wake of 9/11 and its impact on first responders and their families, we wanted to do something to benefit those who sacrificed and selflessly put their lives on the line to save New Yorkers during the 9/11 attacks,” Caldwell said. “We worked closely with Protocol Cigars to find the right foundation and also to help carry the marketing message forward.”
The artwork represents the brave first responders. It features the First Responder flag, an American flag with multi-colored stripes. Each stripe represents a branch. Green for armed forces, white for emergency medical services, red for the fire department, blue for law enforcement, gray for corrections, and yellow for dispatch.
The cigars
ONE is a limited-edition, single-sized cigar. Only 600 bundles of ten cigars are releases. The size is a 5×50 Robusto, made from all Dominican tobacco. The wrapper is Habano, just like the binder. The filler contains Corojo, Criollo 98, and Piloto tobacco. The cigars are produced at Tabacalera William Ventura.
Caldwell expects that the cigars are expected to begin shipping within two weeks. Juan Cancel of Protocol Cigar remembers 9/11 well. As a law enforcement officer in New York, he was one of the first responders. “It is a pleasure and an honor to be involved with this project. Being a first responder during 9/11 and seeing firsthand how bad things were, it is great to be involved with this cigar. It’s nice to feel appreciation for putting our lives on the line and paying homage to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. We are thankful to Caldwell Cigars and Lost & Found for including us in this project,”
343 firefighters and paramedics of the New York City Fire Department lost their lives in the attacks. Another 60 police officers from the New York Police Department, New Jersey Police Department, and the Port Authority of New York never returned to their loved ones. The attacks also took the lives of 8 emergency medical technicians and paramedics from private emergency medical service and 1 patrolman from the New York Fire Patrol.
