Montecristo is one of Habanos major Brand. Together with Cohiba and Romeo Y Julieta these three marcas cover an important part of the market.
Montecristo was created in 1935, for its 80th anniversary in 2015, Habanos decided to launch a commemorative cigar. As it begins to be a trend and a normal thing, the Montecristo 80th Aniversario was first seen and enjoyed in 2016 and available in extremely small quantities in 2017… 2 years later.
About to become a mythical cigar I manage to grab one stick and will share with you my thought!

    Appearance : [rating:4.5/5]
What a good looking cigar! Oily, silky, claro wrapper! Everything I would expect from such a high quality cigar. Its dress is sublime and I felt guilty cutting the stick!
The silky feeling on the finger is very impressive. The softness of the wrapper shows that only high grade roller could handle these without cracking them.

    Construction : [rating:4/5]

The pre draw was great. The cigar showed a great construction. Same pressure all the way from head to toe when touching it and this was confirmed with the first lit draw.
The Ash was solid and consistent. Light grey colour and keeping the cigar warm for very long. Throughout the cigar I never had to light it again or to burn a side to adjust the combustion.

    Flavor : [rating:3/5]
The first third starts off very gently. Due to the long shape, the smoke is a bit cooler at the very beginning and expressing a slight freshness or under fermented tobacco leaves. As the smoke slowly warms up the woodiness and earthiness typical of Montecristo appears discretely. Not as much as I would want it. The acidity is low however a rather important bitterness is present disturbing the blend potential to fully express itself.

The second third increase in intensity and the cigar is developing roasted coffee beans aromas and toasted almond notes.the strength is medium and the overall part is monotone without much complexity or changes. Enjoyable flavours and aromas and very consistent without any surprises.

The last third is without surprises, the continuity of the blend. Smooth flavour and aromas in the same notes of woodiness and earthiness. Low acidity and low bitterness. The cigar evolves slightly stronger but not to the typical brand strength of medium to full. Pleasant finish on the palate allowing us to appreciate its coffee and toffee notes melted with green vanilla aroma.

    Overall Rating : [rating:3.5/5]
We have been waiting for the Montecristo 80th Aniversario for so long and to my humble opinion when you pay for a cigar over 50 euros you have high expectation. Almost the same price now as a Montecristo 520 and the 80 Aniversario is to me not playing in the same league.
It is a great cigar but I didn’t find the complexity of a rich Montecristo blend. The changes, the kick, the crush I wanted to have with this cigar. there was nothing bad and wrong and I hope the character of the smoke will increase and develop over the years.
If you find them, get them as they are most highly to get better over the years and they will become as rare as a unicorn.
