During the previous Festival del Habanos held in March in Havana, few brands were celebrated. The major one was Montecristo. Habanos S.A. released during the Gala dinner, at the end of the week, the Linea 1935 from the Montecristo Marca. This linea, with 3 full bodied cigars, is an addition to the medium to full classic line and the medium open line.

    Appearance
The Montecristo Maltes is a heavy ring gauge cigar. Very trendy size, long and robust in the hand. For the first time, the cigar wears a foot band mentioning the cigar name: Maltes. Some would say it protects the feet better. On the paper it does but in reality they tend to slide (at least all my Montecristo Linea 1935 I have been given were loosing this band). There are many new world cigar with this type of double band. One could see a sign from Cuba…

    Tasting

    1st Part
The cigar shows some resistance in the draw but nothing to disturb. The burn is very constant and doesn’t require any adjustment. The cigar is packed of tobacco and well rolled.
The beginning is very fresh with a sight spiciness, disappearing shortly after. Some important vegetal notes and hints of fresh grass are present. The ammonia level is quite high due to the young cigar.I enjoyed the soft and cedar wood aroma being developed in this first part.
The finish on the palate is dry and short with a high after taste bitterness. I was expecting a strong cigar from the beginning but this is more light to medium and a light density of smoke coming out.

    2nd Part
The draw is still resistant but I prefer this than having a loose cigar undefiled. I am still enjoying the perfect burn building up a nice solid ash.
Finally some woodiness, typical of Montecristo cigars, is appearing with a lovely earthiness. The acidity is higher but the bitterness lower, which create a round feeling. The finish is very dry. The amount of smoke is very high creating an incredible aroma taking over the room.

    3rd Part
Great flavours are building up with intense woodiness and earthiness, very deep and long finish. Some great notes of sweetness and liquorice feelings remain on the palate. The blue smoke building up is incredible and a good sign of nice potential.
This part is probably the one I was expected from the beginning and the highlight of the blend.
