La Jugada is a medium-strength cigar by Moya Ruiz. According to Danny Moya and Nelson Ruiz, the cigar’s creators, the name “La Jugada” translates to “the play” or “the move,” and is a reference to their beloved game of dominoes. The cigars are all handrolled at Erik Espinosa’s “La Zona” Factory in Esteli. You can find more information about the blend and more great pictures like the one above on Moya Ruiz official website. I had a chance to smoke one of these recently, and have to agree; it is a pretty nice experience.

    Appearance : [rating:5/5]
This is a very eye-catching cigar. The gold band really stands out against the Mexican San Andreas Maduro wrapper, which is gorgeous and very, very dark brown. There are a few prominent veins, and the triple cap is perfect. No hard or soft spots are detectable. On the foot, you will see the words “Hecho En La Zona,” which translates to “Made in La Zona.”

    Construction : [rating:3.75/5] (3.75)
The construction is not 100% perfect, but it is very good. The draw is easy without being too loose, and the burn is great after the first few puffs (it was a little uneven starting out but was quickly corrected with minimal effort). Past that, it rarely needed touchups. The ash hangs on nicely, and the cigar burns slowly, but it never went out.

    Flavor : [rating:4/5]
The flavors match the colors in the wrapper. Right from the start you get hit with some really amazing dark chocolate and espresso notes. There’s just a touch of spice jazzing it up. The chocolate remains central in the middle third, and the spiciness increases a bit. The coffee comes and goes, and there is a creamy backdrop. A few hints of wood appear, and in the final third, the wood gets stronger and the creaminess changes over to earthiness. Lots of thick, aromatic smoke is produced by this stogie.

There are not a lot of major changes from start to finish, so if you are looking for an unpredictable journey, you won’t find one here. But if you are a chocolate or coffee lover, and you enjoy cigars which offer a consistent experience, you will probably enjoy the flavors and aromas a great deal.

    Value : [rating:4/5]
In the mid-price range, this is a very nice buy, and makes for a perfect dessert smoke. I could easily see buying a box of these to enjoy regularly.

    Overall Rating : [rating:4/5]
There was nothing I didn’t enjoy about this cigar. It was gorgeous to look at, and had rich, delicious, consistent flavors from start to finish. Construction was solid, and the price point is good. Moya Ruiz definitely made a good “play” with this release!
