Many American smokers have yet to try Curivari cigars, but they have been somewhat popular in Europe for over a decade now. “Buenaventura” means “Good luck.” The cigar was developed with the hopes of providing excellence at a low price point (most cigars by Curivari follow suit). This one is available in three different sizes, the BV500 (this one), the BV560 (5 ½ x 56) and BV600 (6 x 600). Did I have “good luck” when I picked up the Curivari Buenaventura BV500? Read on to find out.

    Appearance : [rating:4.5/5]
The Curivari Buenaventura BV500 is a nice-looking cigar that shows only fine veins. It is oily with a nice sheen, and seems to be evenly packed. To all appearances, it is utterly flawless.

    Construction : [rating:4/5]
Draw was a tad tight in the beginning but quickly opened up to perfection. The burn was not so perfect, but it was still fairly good. Now and again it needed a touchup to burn evenly, and the ash was a little flakier than I would have liked, but these were minor foibles.

    Flavor : [rating:4/5]
If you are expecting a lot of twists and turns and surprises, the Curivari Buenaventura BV500 may disappoint, but if you want a nice consistent smoke with little subtle variations throughout, you may very much enjoy this. The flavor profile was reasonably complex, with a creamy backdrop and notes of cocoa, cherry, spice, coffee, and caramel. Toasty, nutty notes emerged toward the tail end. There were no major changes, more like variations on a theme. All in all, a lovely symphony of flavors and aromas.

    Value : [rating:4.5/5]
Despite the minor drawbacks with construction, you cannot possibly complain about the price. At around $5.00 a stick, these are an excellent deal.

    Overall Rating : [rating:4.5/5]
Is Curivari Buenaventura BV500 a perfect cigar? Not quite, but it may still be the perfect everyday smoke. The flavors and aromas are delightful, and while it does not throw any major twists or turns, the subtle variations keep things interesting, and the blend is very nice from start to finish. Construction is still quite good, and the price can’t be beat. These may be a new favorite.
