The Cigar Lounges of Phuket

I love Asia, especially the South Eastern part of the continent. The food, the weather, the people, I just love it. So every chance I get, I will hop on a plane to a new, or already visited, South East Asian destination. Recently I went on a vacation to Thailand and ended up on the beautiful island of Phuket. I knew that there are several resorts, hotels, restaurants and bars that allow cigar smoking and even sell cigars. But there are also three proper cigar lounges on the island, all three with a different vibe and their own identity.

Churchill’s

Located very conveniently in the lively heart of Phuket Old Town you will find Churchill’s. This cigar bar opened in 2021 when Whisgars, a famous cigar and whisky bar in Bangkok, decided to close its outlet in Phuket. The franchisee, the British expat Richard Valentine, decided to open a new place and that’s Churchill’s.

The small bar is well stocked with high-end whiskies, great rums including Thai rum (a must try with the Chesa Veglia cigars which are blended especially for Thai businessmen. When in Thailand, try some Thai combinations pairings). The walk-in humidor has a good selection of both Cuban and non-Cuban brands and the approximately 20 seats are comfortable. Nan, the shop manager, is an excellent mixologist so don’t be afraid to ask her for a cocktail.

Sit down, enjoy a cigar, order a cocktail and watch the crowd in front of the original Phuketique, a holy grail for all tourist from the Middle East, while listening to a nice playlist of Cuban music. Churchills is Open daily from 16:00 till midnight except on Monday when the bar remains closed.

La Torcedora

Owner Lawan “Wan” Charoenwong gained her experience in the Bangkok cigar scene since 2013 at famous Chindasia Club and Whisgars Sukhumvit 23 after which she joined Whisgars Phuket. She opened La Torcedora in March 2021, in the midst of Covid, in the beautiful and centrally located Boat Avenue area on the popular west coast. La Torcedora quickly gained popularity and expanded from one small unit to the full six units in the building, making this the biggest cigar lounge on the island. The large walk-in humidor is stocked with cigars from Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. The bar has a wide selection of high-end spirits with even some interesting Thai whisky, Thai rum and Thai gin. Try a Gin & Tonic with the Thai gin, you will be presently surprised.

La Torcedora is as beautiful as the owner Wan who makes you feel at home. There are about 15 luxurious leather chairs inside with another 25 seats on the terrace outdoors. There is also a meeting room available for private parties or meetings, and when not in use, the sliding doors open and the space is integrated in the regular lounge.

La Torcedora is opened daily from noon till 10 pm. Saturdays feature live music and on Friday night, there is a lively Friday night market in the area. The rest of the week you can have a nice lunch or dinner in many of the restaurants that are around. Inspector X tried Uzbek food at the neighbouring restaurant Caravan and I’ll be eating more Uzbek food from now on.

MOAT Cigar Lounge

There is a cigar lounge with the same name in Bangkok, and from what I heard, there will be more MOAT Cigar Lounges all over Thailand. The MOAT lounges are owned and run by Cigar Emperor, owned by Matthew T. Nekvapil, who is the biggest importer of new world cigars in Thailand.

The MOAT Cigar Lounge is also located in the Boat Avenue area, just a stone throw away from La Torcedora. It is a small lounge with only 8 seats inside but there is outside seating as well. It is the perfect spot to see the sunset. The lounge was opened early August of 2023. The manager told Cigar Inspector that the Boat Avenue area is a high value area, and with a casino coming in the near future he expects that the lounge will also be a hub for Cigar Emperor’s wholesale business on the island.

With all the eateries and spa’s around, this is the ultimate getaway for a married man. Send your wife to a spa for a great massage while you enjoy a cigar in the Boat Avenue area, where you have two great choices just a stone throw away from each other. MOAT Cigar Lounge opens daily from 1 pm till 10 pm, except for Monday when it’s closed.
