A Quarter Century of Habanos: 24 Years of Ediciones Limitadas

A Quarter Century of Habanos: 24 Years of Ediciones Limitadas
Date: June 2024

It has been 24 years since the introduction of the first Ediciones Limitadas, or Limited Editions, of Habanos: Hoyo de Monterrey Particulares, Montecristo Robustos, Partagás Pirámides, and Romeo y Julieta Exhibición No. 2.

These special releases are known not only for their distinctive packaging but also for the exclusivity of the Habanos they contain. Initially produced in small quantities with a two-year aged wrapper from higher up on the plant for a darker colour, although in 2007 Habanos changed all the tobacco in the limited edition series to two-year-old tobacco. That is young for other cigar-producing countries, but for Habanos, it’s already aged (and explains why you have to age cigars in your humidor, as Habanos works with tobacco that’s not ready yet). The series is featuring unique or rare vitolas within the brand, Habanos Ediciones Limitadas are highly sought after by premium tobacco enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

Each cigar is marked with a band bearing the words “Edición Limitada” and the year of release. Although the year doesn’t mean a lot anymore, as the releases are often released too late, and in the case of the 2017 Cohiba Talisman, were even rolled after the release date. It’s not uncommon to find boxes of Cohiba Talisman with a 2017 Limited Edition ring but a box code from 2019.

Overview of Ediciones Limitadas Releases

To date, there have been 68 Ediciones Limitadas spanning 12 brands. Among the most prestigious is Cohiba, which has released seven Ediciones Limitadas, including the iconic Cohiba Sublimes Edición Limitada 2004, Cohiba 1966 Edición Limitada 2016, Cohiba Talismán Edición Limitada 2017, and the recently launched Cohiba 55 Aniversario in 2021. H. Upmann’s last Edición Limitada, the H. Upmann Propios, was introduced in 2018 and is notable for its medium ring gauge. Hoyo de Monterrey, meanwhile, launched its seventh Edición Limitada, Monterreyes No. 4, last year, following the notable Epicure Especial in 2004. Partagás presented the Partagás Legado Edición Limitada 2020 at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium, and Romeo y Julieta introduced the Capuletos, a vitola with a 53 ring gauge and 153 mm length, in its latest Edición Limitada. The most recent addition to the Ediciones Limitadas series was Bolívar’s Regentes Edición Limitada 2021, celebrated for its full strength and rich nuances.

Among the 12 protagonist brands in the Ediciones Limitadas, Trinidad stands out this year, celebrating its 55th anniversary with the exclusive launch of Trinidad Cabildos Edición Limitada 2024. This release will be unveiled at the first-ever in-person Habanos World Days, scheduled for June 22nd in London. The Trinidad Cabildos, with a 46 ring gauge and 162 mm length, is an exclusive and unique vitola within the Trinidad brand portfolio. Its name honours the Villa de Santísima Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and pays tribute to one of the first cabildos founded in Cuba during the colonial era.

The Trinidad Cabildos Release

Presented in a specially designed case containing 12 Habanos, the Trinidad Cabildos are “Totally handmade with Long Filler,” crafted from meticulously selected leaves (Wrapper, Filler, and Binder) harvested by the best producers in the Vuelta Abajo area of Pinar del Río, Cuba. These leaves have been aged for at least two years to ensure the highest quality. As customary, the Habanos feature an additional band indicating the Ediciones Limitadas and the year, along with a foot band commemorating the 55th anniversary. This release also incorporates NFC technology for enhanced security and communication.

This significant release is just one of the surprises planned for the “Trinidad Year,” which will be further celebrated at the Habanos World Days from June 20th to 22nd in London. The Trinidad Cabildos promises to be a highlight, blending tradition, exclusivity, and the highest standards of quality in honour of Trinidad’s rich heritage.

Marketing Strategies Behind Limited Editions

Personally, I never fell for the whole Limited Edition thing. It’s the same blend as the regular releases, just in a different vitola and a fancier box for an inflated price. And the age, well, you can age the regular releases for two years and get the same result. But it is still a genius marketing move, as many people have FOMO and want to have these Edicion Limitada cigars and have to get them quickly before they are all sold out.

Plus, how limited are the cigars really? In my opinion, something is limited when it’s impossible to make more than a certain number of cigars because it’s made with rare tobacco for example. With all the limited edition cigars out there, both Cuban and Non-Cuban, this is rarely the case. Most are only ‘limited’ because the manufacturer puts a stop to the production but doesn’t that make everything ‘limited’? If Bic only decides to make one million lighters, can they call it a limited edition? But the fact is: creating the same cigar in a different vitola and slapping on an ‘Edicion Limitada’ ring boosts sales thus the marketing behind the limited edition program works.
