    Casa Torano Robusto

    Origin : Honduras
    Torano cigarsFormat : Robusto
    Size : 4.75 x 52
    Wrapper : Ecuador
    Filler : Honduras, Nicaragua
    Binder : Indonesia
    Hand-Made
    Price : $6.15

Four generations ago, the Toraño family began making fine cigars in Havana, Cuba. In 1959 the family left Cuba and was instrumental in pioneering the art of processing Piloto Cubano in the Dominican Republic. Today, Casa Toraño has 13 cigar lines with factories in Honduras and Nicaragua.

    Appearance : [rating:3/5]
The Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper is smooth and elastic with a few small veins and a subtle green tint. A point deduction was given because of a few blemishes in the wrapper, along with an incompletely covered foot.

    Construction : [rating:4.5/5]
The cigar is well rolled showing an even pack. Seams in the wrapper are almost invisible, and the cap is generous. Drawing on the cigar is effortless, and the smoker is rewarded with a mouth full of smoke every time. Even toward the end, this Robusto burned cool and evenly.

    Flavor : [rating:4/5]
The Casa Toraño Robusto begins very mild and slightly grassy. A slightly sweet cedar note joined the grassy flavor just before the nutty finish. Every few draws a hint of spice is noted in the creamy smoke.

    Value : [rating:4/5]
At just over six dollars this cigar provides a pleasing, relaxing, and soft profile that begs to be complimented with a lightly roasted coffee.

    Overall Rating : [rating:4/5]
The Casa Toraño Robusto is a relaxing cigar with a nicely balanced set of light flavors in the mild – medium bodied range. Because of the flavor and reasonable price range, trying this cigar is highly recommended.

My Review of the Casa Torano Maduro Toro

The Casa Torano Maduro Toro is not as pretty as its Connecticut-wrapped brother. This is a rougher looking cigar; it has a crinkly veins dark black wrapper with some water spots.

It is firm to the touch but after lighting it has a nice draw with a decent amount of smoke and an even burn which is great for a CBL wrapped cigar.

One thing I really like about this cigar is that it has a nice aroma, which is very rich and aromatic.

I pick up quite a few flavors as I smoke; it is earthy and leathery with a slight sweetness. There are some metallic notes to the finish which is pretty long.

I’d like to try this cigar in the lancero size (which it is available in), I think this tasty wrapper could be showcases well in that size.

My Review of the Casa Torano Toro

The Casa Torano Toro is a very good looking cigar, darker than the normal Connecticut Shade wrapped cigar. This makes sense as the wrapper is grown in Ecuador and they cannot grow Connecticut Shade under the shade. In Ecuador it must be grown under full sun.

By the appearance alone, it is no surprise that this is a smooth, creamy cigar. This silky toro is mild in strength but medium in body. As I smoke this, I get rich notes of wood and toasted nuts. There is some white chocolate and coffee notes on the finish which is long.

The cigar has a nice even burn (that did get off a couple of times) and a great draw. The finish is nice and long rich with cream and coffee.

If you like mild cigars with full flavor, you should definitely give this a try.

The cigar is beautifully constructed, you can tell just off the bat; the wrapper is thicker then you’d generally expect a wrapper to be, but it’s silky smooth. You can generally feel the oil. The smell is exceptionally ‘barnyard,’ in that it smelled a lot like hay. The burn was fantastic. The initial flavor was a bit more bitter then I’d have liked, but it sank back into a leather that I enjoyed, with the finish and alternative flavor of something akin to a burnt sugar cookie. A sort of citrus/lemon finish crept in. The cigar as a whole tasted very organic. The last third develops characteristics of nut, and soon becomes rather bitter. The burn remains razor-sharp, and requires no touch ups or maintenance, or even attention. The smoke remains incredibly thick and creamy throughout.

I found this to be a nice, mild smoke, very relaxing. I was especially impressed with the draw. It was so effortless I thought it might be a bit loose and result in thin smoke, but instead I was pleasantly surprised.

Because the cigar was received from an online vendor I initially suspected the same thing. After noting a similar defect when scrutinizing several additional samples at a local cigar store I became less certain. Either way, the bulk of the deduction on appearance was due to color variation and blemishes in the wrapper leaf.

i think the wrapper just pulled away from the foot because of variances in humidity over time. more to do with storage than production, no? though, i could be wrong.
