    Paul Stulac Red Screaming Sun

    Origin : NicaraguaPaul Stulac

    Wrapper : Connecticut Broadleaf
    Filler : Nicaragua
    Binder : Indonesia Sumatra

The Red Screaming Sun line from boutique manufacturer Paul Stulac debuted at the 2012 IPCPR, and includes three sizes: Robusto (5”x54), Toro (6”x56), and Torpedo (6”x54). The packaging and labeling includes the motto “Regalo De Dios,” which translates to “Gift of God,” and the brand has promoted itself with the words, “No tales of tobacco fields. No 100-year traditions. No pretenses.” It’s a bold line to take in an industry where roots run deep—and a smart move from a newcomer that wants to promote its cigars by demonstrating their quality, not leaning on a nonexistent history. Let’s see what they have to offer.

    Appearance : [rating:4/5]
The Red Screaming Sun Robusto is a rough, rugged-looking cigar with some unevenness to it. The veins don’t feel all that prominent, but they stand out visually. The wrapper is a dark, rich brown with a fair amount of oil. The unevenness makes me worry a bit about construction and whether there will be draw issues. The red and gold label stands out nicely against the dark wrapper leaf.

    Construction : [rating:3.5/5]
The burn line is razor sharp and I have to only make a couple of small corrections. As I expected, though, there are some issues with the draw. At times it is just right, but at other times it is a bit on the tight side. Thankfully these issues self-resolved, but at this price point it would have been nicer not to deal with them. The cigar also went out a bit early. I would have liked to smoke it down to the nub, but it didn’t want to stay lit at the end.

    Flavor : [rating:5/5]
This stick really shines when it comes to flavor! Even the pre-light draw was amazing. Lighting up, I got notes of earth, leather, and pepper—more like hot pepper than black pepper. There is also coffee and cream rounding out the flavor profile, and plenty of billowing, aromatic smoke. The spices mellow down around halfway, and the coffee and cream amp up along with some oak and a splash of cherry. In the last third, the wood flavors come out of the woodwork and the pepper makes a comeback. The coffee stays rich, but the cream falls away, and the leather notes fade as well. The earthy backdrop is still there, and there’s a hint of sweetness that reminds me of graham crackers.

It’s hard to say exactly what is so amazing about these flavors, since most of them are typical cigar flavors, but I would say it is the particular quality of the pepper, and something about the balance of sweetness and spiciness.

    Value : [rating:3.5/5]
You will pay around $10-$12 per stick for these, and while they are very good, the construction issues keep the value from being a 5/5 for me. If not for the tight draw spots and the problems staying lit toward the end, I would say these are easily worth the high price. As it is, I would have been happier if they were closer to $8-$10. I still would buy a box, though, even at the present price.

    Overall Rating : [rating:4/5]
The burn, draw, and high price keep the Red Screaming Sun Robusto from being a solid 5/5, but the flavors really are incredible, and this is a great offering from a relatively new boutique brand. I can’t wait to see what they do in the future; I am sure it will be amazing.

@ Paul Stulac: You’ll know you’ve arrived as a global cigar presence when my BOTLs in Malaysia stop giving me blank looks. But I’m working on it…. 🙂

Patrick Julien: you’re preaching to the choir 🙂 – I get through a box of the Asylum 13 robustos every 3-4 months. The corojo version doesn’t quite do it for me though. Thanks!

Thank you for the great review. I realm appreciate it as I’m not the guy who comes out with new sticks every week just for the sake of coming out with something new. Right or wrong its my personal philosophy however it doesn’t give a lot of new news to have everyone writing about the line.
That being said the great news is that as of very recently I have finally been able to achieve my goal of lowering our prices. We are moving the right amount of cigars so our packaging costs have been lowered etc. I’m passing this along to the end consumer because I believe in value and everyone being able to partake in smoking them as they are able to budget wise. White, Red and Black are now under $10 and Classic’s are under $7 or $8.
Again thank you for the kind words. They mean a lot. Best to all! -Paul

Have to agree with Nino here – I’ve tried all the Stulac blends and the Red is the least impressive in my opinion, being merely very good. The White and Black are both stunning smokes and if anyone knows a better cigar than the Classic in the $7-8 price range, I’m all ears. 5-packs of all these blends crop up frequently on Famous Smoke’s CigarMonster site, at much lower prices.

Good review! I rarely smoke NCs, but happened to smoke a black banded Paul Stulac just a couple of nights ago and was very impressed. Thought it was one of the most balanced and enjoyable NCs I’ve had in years. I had no burn or draw issues, but mine has been sitting in my humidor for a year or two.

Nice review, I have smoked 3 of these and found them a bit to sweet for my liking, the cherry put me off. This is my least favorite from Paul Stulac’s line up. I really like the classic robusto, and for a stronger smoke I am hooked on the white blinding lite robusto, the black midnight is a good smoke aswell. Glad you enjoyed the Paul red. As for the price it is a bit high but the flavor speaks for it’s self I think. Can’t wait to see you review his other line ups.
