Paul Stulac Classic Lord of Albany

    Origin : NicaraguaPaul Stulac

    Size : 6 x 44
    Wrapper : Ecuadorian Habano
    Filler : Nicaragua
    Binder : Nicaraguan
    Hand-Made
    Price : ~$7 each

The Lord of Albany, a 6 x 44 lonsdale, is a new addition to the Paul Stulac Classic line, and comes in two different wrappers: Natural and Maduro. These are both Ecuadorian Habano wrappers, but the Maduro wrapper is aged longer than the Natural wrapper. In appearance they are quite similar, and I would be hard-pressed to tell them apart on sight. For this review, I tried the Natural.

    Appearance : [rating:4/5]
The Paul Stulac Classic Lord of Albany Natural is a warm, medium-brown color, with a few prominent veins in the wrapper leaf. The leaf is very oily and has a really bright sheen to it. It isn’t smooth, though; there is a lot of tooth, and the texture if very coarse in my hands. Whether or not this is a plus or a minus to you depends on whether you like rustic cigars. This is a rustic cigar.

    Construction : [rating:5/5]
In terms of construction, this is an impressive stick. The burn line was straight as a razor and I had to make almost no corrections. The draw was perfect from the very first puff—open enough to be comfortable, but just tight enough to deliver. The slim ring gauge also makes for a comfortable, easy smoke.

    Flavor : [rating:5/5]
Before even lighting up, I am really amazed by the rich aromas from this cigar. You don’t get just your standard tobacco sweetness wafting from the stick; you can easily smell cocoa, spices, coffee, wood, and earth. It smells like a real treat, and it is one. Those aromas perfectly represent the flavor profile. Starting out, you get a blast of spices backed by cedar, and of course coffee and cocoa.

There is something almost vegetal in the middle third that I can’t quite identify. The flavors get really creamy at this point, and the spice fades to the back. The final third is dominated by coffee and cocoa. The spices are now even further back, and the finish is smooth and creamy. It’s very flavorful right down to the nub and not at all bitter, even at the end. This really went by way too fast, and I am disappointed that it’s already over. I definitely prefer it to the Red Screaming Sun that I reviewed last month.

    Value : [rating:5/5]
Pretty hard to go wrong here. You can buy these for around $6-$7 per stick, and that is quite nice! I would be very happy to have a box of these. I would also love to compare with the maduro.

    Overall Rating : [rating:5/5]
The only possible complaint I could have about this cigar is the toothy, rustic look and feel, but that’s really a totally subjective thing. The flavors are deliciously rich and make this the perfect dessert cigar. It burns straight and true and the draw is perfect. Awesome construction, delectable flavors and aromas, and a superb all-around experience for a very reasonable price.

I haven’t tried the Lord of Albany yet. I’ve been smoking the robusto’s and they are amazing, nice and creamy and flavourful. Pretty much the same flavours as you described in the Albany, only difference is the ring guage. This is one of my go to cigars if I’m looking for something mild-medium, can’t go wrong with this stick. Great review, glad you enjoyed the classic line.
