December 2009

Trinidad Robusto T

It’s the middle of December and here comes the list of the best Cuban cigars of 2009. I had no problems selecting the #1, but the competition for positions 2-5 was quite tough.

  1. Trinidad Robusto T. This is an example of how a Cuban cigar can live up to the expectations. What an amazing cigar!
  2. H. Upmann Magnum 48 LE 2009. For the immediate pleasure and for its ageing potential, the limited edition from H. Upmann gets the #2 spot.
  3. Ramon Allones Specially Selected. As consistent as last year, this robusto keeps a place in the top 5. Still a solid box purchase.
  4. San Cristobal de la Habana Oficios. My discovery of the year – I fell in love with this vitola.
  5. Partagas Shorts. Properly aged, this is one of the best petit coronas the Cuban terroir has to offer. Unbeatable price/quality ratio.

I decided not to include very limited releases as well as regional editions in the above list as these cigars are hard to get.

The disappointment of the year, you will probably agree with me, is the Montecristo Open.

I am curious to hear your experiences. What Cuban cigars did you enjoy in 2009?

  1. @Ted
If you buy cigars off a peddler on the beach, I’d say chances are approximately 99% of getting a fake.

  2. Hello,

I am planning on visiting Cuba. I hear of people selling fake cuban or low quality cuban cigars everywhere. How can I tell if I am getting an authentic cuban cigar if I bump into one of these peddlers and break down and buy off them?

  3. My top four are
    #1 Cohiba Genio Maduro 5
    #2 Cohiba Siglo VI
    #3 Trinadad Robusto Extra
    #4 Montecristo #2

  4. 1- Ramon Alones Phenicio edition regionale Libanon
    2- Trinidad robusto T
    3- Magnum 48
    4- Lusitania
    5- Magnum 50

  5. Oops. One of them ain’t Cuban. Sorry. But that’s where it sits in my best of the year list!

  6. Pour moi:

    1. Trinidad Robusto Extra
    2. Partagas Lusitania
    3. Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona
    4. Puros Indios Toro Especiale
    5. Cohiba Siglo VI

  7. Here’s mine…
    1) RASS
    2) H Upmann LE Magnum 48
    3) Juan Lopez 2
    4) Cohiba Siglo VI
    5) Bolivar Belicoso Fino

between 1 and 3….and the Montecristo 2….these are becoming my go to cigars but the bolivar is moving up quick!

    Happy Holidays!

  8. I totally agree with the inclusion of RASS again. What a great robusto it is! So consistent, reliable and incredibly tasty.

  9. I haven’t tried any of the new Montecristos, but I tell you: my great disappointment so far with a cuban cigar was the Cuaba Piramides. Terrible.

  10. The Montecristo Open series, as you say, is a very big disappointment. As a marketing excercise it may have some success but unfortunatly it will turn new smokers off and from what I can see that was the market being chased. Big fail as far as I can see and bad for the great Monte cuban taste.
