June 2015

This year we’re as usual a bit late with the ‘best of’ Cuban list, sorry about that. On the bright side, this delay gave us a chance to smoke all of these cigars again in the beginning of 2015, which confirmed the ratings.

Like last year, the list is composed of cigars that we smoked in 2014 (with mostly recent box codes). Without further ado, here’s the list.

1. Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe

Surprisingly, the Hoyo de Monterrey brand secures the #1 spot again! This time it’s a LCDH-exclusive release called “Epicure de Luxe”. It’s definitely the best Cuban cigar I smoked in 2014 and I finished my first box in January 2015. Planning to open my second box this fall!

2. H. Upmann Connossieur A

H. Upmann Connossieur A

The H. Upmann Connossieur A is another quite exclusive release which is available at La Casa del Habanos but also in Habanos Specialists shops around the world. Flavor-wise, this cigar is as good as it gets, if you like the delicate and balanced Cuban profile, you’ll be in for a treat. Overall there were a few construction issues (mainly burn) in these cigars though, otherwise they could have easily made it to the very top of this list!

3. Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto

Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robustos

Unfortunately, overall in 2014 I had way less time to dedicate to smoking than I wished, due to work and health issues. In this context, small cigars like Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto really shine and I’m fairly sure that this was my most smoked cigar in 2014. If properly aged, it packs everything Cuba has to offer in a rather small format.

4. Cohiba BHK 52

Cohiba BHK 52

Reliable, consistent, posh: the Cohiba BHK 52 is just as good as last year, and is a perfect special occasion smoke all-around. This is my first choice for informal meetings with business partners.

5. Vegas Robaina Famosos

Not really a mainstream cigar, the Vegas Robaina Famosos box that I kept in my humidor since 2012 gave me some very pleasant moments on the rare occasions I could enjoy a cigar indoors in winter.

What were the best Cuban cigars that you smoked recently?

  1. Guys, I know what you mean when you say epicure de luxe was a dud. I smoked one 2 months after buying it from Cuba. Bland and tasteless, worse than illusions epernay. I left the remaining box until a year later. I smoked one recently, and it became very good. Not the best Cuban, but very good. The difference amazed me…………. far better than the typical epicure which is a sugar cane.

At this price, I would get wide Churchill or JL2.

  2. up there with all those beautiful cigars is the Partagas P2.TRY ONE TODAY.

  3. Mike, I purchased a box of 25 of the HDM Double Corona back in October 2012. I had 10 left and took one out to smoke while watching Monday Night Football. By far, the best cigar I’ve ever had. This cigar ages very well.

  4. I forgot the Partagas Lusitania, another great one for early 2014!

  5. I think the Hoyo D M, double carona was/is steller for 2014, went in on A three way split, and had to purchase another!! ALOT more body than years past!! Also the Cohiba Sig. IV, short supply but they are smoking as good or better than previous years!

  6. Hmm, I found the Petite Robusto to be very good but the Partagas Serie D No 4 was a much more consistent and flavorful smoke. Also, the HDM Epicure Especial should be on this list if not in the top spot.

  7. Had 2-HDM Epicure Deluxes from a sampler pack and have to say these are a classy smoke offering some of the best of Cuba. (based on the two I smoked).

  8. As the Inspector says, it’s down to palates, but it’s also down to luck in getting a good box or a Friday afternoon one. My two worst smokes of the last 12 months were the highly acclaimed Epicure De Luxe and the equally fawned-over Epicure Especial. Money down the drain on both boxes and thankfully they were only 10s. However, the second best Cuban I smoked was the lovely Hoyo Petit Robusto, the best being the ever-dependable Upmann Connoisseur No 1, from 2011. It’s a sign of the times, though, that nothing from Cuba made it into my personal top 5.

  9. havent try yet the petit robusto, my favortie one is the epicure no.1…

  10. @ScottyBoy
No problem. We all have different palates and that’s a good thing IMO. Seems like people either love the Deluxe or hate it. Also, obviously I don’t pretend to have smoked all the Cuban offerings in 2014, so I could definitely have missed something.

  11. Strange list. You sure these 5 weren’t the only 5 you smoked all year? Agree with a previous poster that the Epi Deluxe was a dud….and so is this list. Sorry.

  12. The Hoyo Epicure de Luxe was such a huge surprise to me, but I have to agree. It really is a very good smoke.

  13. Big fan of the HDM petite’s, would like to try the H Upmann A.

  14. Interesting list indeed! I loved both the Epicure de Luxe and the H. Upmann Connossieur A, I wish they were more widely available though.

  15. I’m absolutely a huge fan of the Monte Cristo #2 as well as the petite and most recently a Robusto size that I came across…All pack lots of flavor! So I have to say the Monte Cristo’s was and still the best to me.

However the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe ,#1 Cuban smoke of 2014 was phenomenal.

  16. Love the Upmann Connie A and the BHK52 but I can say without a doubt that the box of Epicure De Luxe I picked up was a complete dud!

  17. surprising list

  18. my palate differs greatly from yours.

  19. The HDM Petit Robusto is the best Cuban I have smoked in the last 2-years. Great stick and reasonable price.
