April 2012

General Cigar, owner of the Cohiba trademark, has announced that more than 10,000 counterfeit Cohiba cigars were seized by law enforcement officials in Miami. The raids on April 23rd were conducted by the Miami Office of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco. The raids were the result of an investigation conducted by law enforcement officials in conjunction with the efforts of General Cigar.

The 10,000 counterfeit cigars were discovered for sale on Calle Ocho, a popular tourist shopping area in Little Havana, Miami. Around 1,800 boxes of counterfeit cigars worth over $200,000 were uncovered and confiscated in all. The cigars included the Cohiba brand name along with the words “Republica Dominicana.” Nor is this the only instance of fraud uncovered by the brand. In November of last year, law enforcement officials in Florida seized over 3,000 counterfeit Cohiba cigars in Key West.

I thought only Cuban cigars were faked, but it turns out some people fall for counterfeit Dominican Cohibas 🙂

  1. Simple solution,Don’t buy Cohibas!IMO overrated

  2. Jack the price on anything up far enough and it becomes worth counterfeiting, smuggling, etc. Doubly so when the product is either differentiated only by a label or the target audience probably can’t tell the difference anyway.

  3. Some years back in the very late ’90’s to early 2000’s there was this guy who went by the name of “Montecristie” or something who regularly put out cigars with the familiar orange/black/white dots Cohiba bands, and Montecristo “Habano” cigar bands, etc. And it was listed as being Republica Dominicana on the boxes. He’d been admonished, warned, threatened w/legal action, etc. to stop using those “knock-off” cigar bands and all, but that he always belligerently got his back up, blew them off, refused to cooperate, and was always abrasive and contrary in nature. These things I was informed about by various B&M tobacco store owners. His cigars, nonetheless, were actually very, very good which could be the reason he flourished so. I’m wondering if this haul could be overseen and run by this same guy.
