La Flor Dominicana showcased a number of exciting new cigars at the 2015 IPCPR, but the brand’s focal point cigar this year was definitely La Flor Dominicana La Nox. This cigar was created by Tony Gomez, owner Litto Gomez’ son. You may have already tried Tony’s other creations in 2013 and 2014, Chapter One and Capitulo II respectively.

I’d heard a lot of great things about this cigar, so I was thrilled to get a chance to try it. As it turned out, it more than met my expectations.

Appearance : ★★★★★
“La Nox” of course translates to “The Night.” Night is the theme for these dark cigars, and it is one which is beautifully explored through creative packaging and branding. It’s noteworthy that a lot of cigar brands come up with a theme or concept for a stogie and then design a stick around that theme. Tony Gomez took the exact opposite approach here. He crafted the cigar, and then went with the theme which presented itself naturally through the appearance and flavors of the tobacco.

La Flor Dominicana La Nox cigars come in a distinctive circular black box with the logo for La Nox in the center—a crescent moon, moonlit clouds, and “LFD” in fancy script. At the bottom of the box in a different typeface, it says, “La Nox.” It’s a gorgeous box which showcases the best of minimalist design.

Both the “LFD” logo and “La Nox” are repeated on the cigar bands in the same dark, elegant colors. You will notice when you open up the boxes that the cigar wrappers themselves are also a very dark brown. It’s easy to see how the Brazil Cubra leaf inspired the nighttime theme; in a certain light, the wrapper is almost black. There are a few fine veins and a nice oily sheen. I can’t say enough how stunning the cigar presentation is.

Construction : ★★★★★
This is another area where La Flor Dominicana La Nox excels. The draw is open with just enough resistance, and produces plenty of billowing smoke. The burn line is razor sharp. I only touched it up for cosmetic reasons, and only a couple of times. The cigar never burns too hot or too fast. The white ash that clings to the foot of the cigar makes for a bold contrast with the dark wrapper.

Flavor : ★★★★☆
It wasn’t just the color of the wrapper, but also the flavors of the tobacco that lent inspiration to the nighttime theme of La Flor Dominicana La Nox. The cigar was named in large measure as a reflection of the dark chocolate flavor which is so prominent from start to finish.

On the first draw, I pick up that chocolate note, which is ever-so-slightly sweetened. It blends beautifully with oak, fruit, and spices, and almost makes me think of the holidays—just with more subtlety and less sweetness. There are a few other notes in here as well which are in the background—earth, hay, and something meaty, like barbecue, adding a savory charred edge to the flavors.

During the second third, the dark chocolate becomes sweeter, but there is some bitterness from the fruit notes which helps to balance it out. The oak and the meaty flavor have a charred component, adding depth to the flavors. The medium bodied strength moves toward full, but never overwhelms.

In the final third, the earthy note is more prominent. Dark chocolate and oak are still in the foreground, but roasted nuts are now accompanying the charred flavors, and the spice has really kicked up. There is also a hint of wine and espresso.

All in all, I would say this cigar offers a unique blend of consistency and complexity. The dark chocolate and oak are the anchors for the flavor profile, but there are plenty of intriguing notes weaving in and out. Each of them meshes beautifully with the rest.

I’ve noticed that there is a fair amount of divergence among cigar smokers reporting on the notes they detect in La Flor Dominicana La Nox. It seems like your mileage may vary with this one. Everyone seems to agree it’s great, but each person seems to pick up distinct flavors in the backdrop. I’ll be really curious to try a few more of these and see if I detect different notes I missed or failed to identify this time around.

Value : ★★★★☆
I actually can’t complain at all about paying $11 a stick for these. They are really good, and the price is totally justified. That having been said, I have had excellent cigars for a few dollars less, and they’d certainly be easier to stock up on if they did cost a little less.

Overall Rating : ★★★★★
I can easily see why this was one of the most talked-about cigars at IPCPR, and why it has received so much praise from cigar publications and blogs. La Nox is a unique smoke. The appearance of the cigars and the packaging are incredibly slick and stylish, and the flavor profile is complex without being convoluted—refined is the word I think I’d choose. It’s tough to find a cigar that successfully walks that line, but La Flor Dominicana La Nox does it with sophistication!

  1. Thanks for the review. LFD’s are my favorite overall brand and I still have some Chapter 1 and 2’s resting. I’ll have to give them a try and see how they fit into the LFD line flavor and strength-wise.

  2. A game changer for LFD, this was a fantastic smoke, very unique, full bodied and rich as can be. I totally agree with your review. Not only was there hype/talk about this cigar but the “backorder” status at damn near every shop in the nation should tell you something. I think LFD is in great hands with Tony!

  3. I’m smoking one as I type, paired it with a nice creamy Franziskaner Weissbier and it’s fantastic

I usually feel that LFD cigars are some of the best on the market. The L-Granu is my favorite. But I was very disappointed in the LA-NOX not much flavor that I am used to with LA FLOR cigars.

  6. Truly an exquisite cigar. Smooth throughout. While the chocolate is predominant the fruity notes add a certain lightness to it. An incredibly enjoyable smoke, one that makes you just want to take your time and savor its complexities.

  7. I think you guys hit a home run with this new feature!!!!!!!

  8. Seems like a great value. I will add to my wish list. Thank you for the review.
