La Flor de Cano is a discreet Cuban brand with just a couple of regular production cigars and a minor market share. Since 2010, a few regional editions were released, including this La Flor de Cano Gran Cano for the United Kingdom.

(Note: With this review, I am switching from a 5 to a 10 point scale).

    Appearance : [rating:9/10]
Dark Colorado, almost a Colorado Maduro, slightly oily sheen, minor veins. Dark for an Edición Regional cigar. Tight white ash.

    Construction : [rating:8/10]
Slightly firm draw. Well-packed and consistent throughout. Average volume of smoke. Burn was even, nearly perfect. Never required touch-up. Dense enough to last a full two hours, but somehow I smoked it in under an hour and a half. I’ve smoked 14 of these from three different boxes and noted that they must have used a super glue on the bands because, until this particular cigar, they will not come off without tearing the wrapper. With the double band, this means you end up destroying the wrapper before you’ve made it through 2/3rds of the cigar. It is a terrible way to end a cigar. This time I was fortunate (and rated the cigar accordingly) but I don’t expect it to happen again. The last third burned a bit unevenly, but the wrapper remained strong and intact.

    Flavor : [rating:6/10]
Opens of slightly burned toast. Slight pecan and leather notes and a hint of black tea. No pepper nor harshness on the retrohale. Very smooth. Really nice beginning to a cigar. Quite “dry” with a fairly long, dry finish, like graham crackers left on the tongue. Would likely pair well with a very light cocktail or champagne, but my martini overpowers this cigar. No classic characteristics of a LFdC, but I haven’t had much experience with young LFdCs . Develops a little spiciness, perhaps green peppers? Towards mid-smoke, the flavors have washed out a little and my enjoyment of the taste decreases. A burnt Starbucks coffee taste emerges. Any sweetness in the finish has disappeared. The cigar has become harsh with a little metallic residue. Again, smoking it without concentrating is enjoyable; however, focusing on the flavors is less pleasant.

    Overall Rating : [rating:7/10]
I enjoyed the flavors of others I have smoked more, probably because I did not focus on the flavors; I simply smoked them. Nonetheless, the construction on this particular stick was very good. I have blind faith that these will improve significantly and think I will wait a year or two before trying another. Overall, I am reaching a little in giving these a 7 out of 10.

Interesting review – thanks. Have to admit I have been tearing wrappers off of Cubans recently with the glue on the bands…..
