Origin : Honduras Format : Robusto Size : 120 x 20 mm Ring : 50 Wrapper : USA/Connecticut Filler : Honduras Binder : Honduras Hand-Made Price : ~$7 each
Here is the flagship brand by Maya Selva (feel free to read our review of the Cumpay Robusto, Maya’s cigar from Nicaragua). Mostly sold in Europe, Flor de Selva cigars were hardly found in the US after the cigar boom, but we will probably see more of these in future, because their quality is above average. Let’s have a closer look at the robusto.
Appearance : [rating:4.5/5]
The colorado wrapper is smooth and slightly striated.
Construction : [rating:5/5]
After easily cutting the cigar, I tested the pre-draw – it was free and slightly woody. I lit it up and found the draw to be impeccable all the way. Flor de Selva burned well at an average speed. I would also like to mention the beautiful ash this stick sports, it’s really firm.
Flavor : [rating:4/5]
The first third is very light, it features woody and vegetal flavors, well-balanced. I immediately felt that I shouldn’t expect a lot of evolution from this stick and I was right. In the second third, only a few green pepper notes appeared but I can’t call it boring – comfortable is a better adjective. In the very end, however, I noticed some acidity that I didn’t really appreciate, but it certainly didn’t spoil the whole picture.
Value : [rating:4/5]
A box of these can be found at around $150 online, which I consider a decent price.
Overall Rating : [rating:4.5/5]
I enjoyed this Honduran cigar quite a bit. If you are up for a pleasant 1-hour smoke without excessive complexity, you can give the Flor de Selva Robusto a try.
