I have been patiently waiting to try this cigar for some time. When I heard the news that Davidoff was going to make a Maduro cigar, I got very excited.

One of the reasons is that I find it difficult to find a consistent maduro, especially one that burns evenly. I figured if anyone could do it, Kelner could!

The Davidoff Maduro R is lighter than other maduros, but way darker than any other Davidoff. The draw was nice and easy and it took a light fairly well. Unfortunately right off the bat, the cigar started burning unevenly. It appears that even Henke Kelner is not immune to the difficulties inherent in a thick wrapper leaf such as the maduro. I think he clearly went with a Nicaraguan Maduro leaf rather than a Connecticut Broadleaf for this very reason.

Flavor wise, the cigar was excellent, it was rich and sweet. It was earthy and full of chocolate and coffee notes. The finish was also not as dry as other Davidoff cigars.

This is definitely Davidoff’s strongest blend, there is a lot of added spice and flavor with the darker wrapper.

One other thing, I got a few tar globs at the onset of the smoke. I had to clip it up further in order to continue smoking. This was a first for me and Davidoffs. So there were a few construction issues (gasp!) but I really enjoyed the flavor. I need to try another couple before I form my full opinion on the new Davidoff Maduro R.
