    Cohiba Genios

    Origin : Cuba
    Format : RobustoCohiba
    Size : 140 x 20.64 mm (5.5 x 52)
    Ring : 52
Wrapper : Maduro aged 5 years
Box code : STA AUG 09
    Hand-Made
    Price : ~$20 each

I have tried the smaller Secretos version of the Maduro 5 previously, but not its big brother, the Genios until now. Most of the reviews I’ve read on the Genios have been positive, so I was hoping to have the same luck, though I wasn’t terribly impressed with Secretos. I enjoyed this with a nicely aged cabernet sauvignon, which paired pretty well.

    Appearance : [rating:2.5/5]
This was a very rustic looking cigar with a sloppy cap, lumpy feel, and big veins. It looked more like a Padron than a Cohiba. It had an earthy/leathery smell at cold.

    Construction : [rating:3.5/5]
The draw was a little tight for my taste, but wasn’t plugged by any means. The burn was straight the 1st 2/3 of the cigar then became crooked.

    Flavor : [rating:3.5/5]
This cigar started with an earthy and leathery taste with some cedar flavors on the finish. It wasn’t very smooth at this point, and didn’t really taste much like a conventional Cuban cigar. However, at the midpoint the cigar hit its stride. Some coffee flavors developed and the Genios started to become more balanced and smooth. Finally this cigar tastes Cuban! This was short lived though, as it became harsh toward the end and lost most of its flavors.

    Value : [rating:2/5]
I find it tough to justify these at over $20 a piece. However, I’m a cheapskate and think that Cohibas are overpriced in general (even though I do like them).

    Overall Rating : [rating:3/5]
Overall I enjoyed this cigar despite its inconsistencies. If the whole thing tasted like its 2.5″ sweet spot I would have thought it was great and rated it higher. There was just too much harshness at the beginning and end for me to overlook given its exorbitant price. However, I did think it was better than the Secretos and would consider trying another to see how the experiences compare.

      Hi Jason,

I was hoping you could speak to how you came upon this cigar.

Your review describes perfectly my experience with “Cohiba Genios,” a good cigar, adequate construction, minimal maduro flavours, decent cuban flavours, inconsistenet throughout with some periods of significant harshness.

However let me explain the quotations. The Cohiba Genios” were purchased from the a Cuban hotels event coordinator. These are under the table cigars that are easily purchased by tourists in Cuba, they come in open boxes for inspection then the Cuban stickers are applied after purchase to seal the box, stickers all bands, labels, and sticker appear to be legit. These are quality cigars – well made with good Cuban tobacco that offer great bang for the buck. But, they are not the same cigars that you buy in a legitimate store- I am convinced of this 1) because my experience with these under the tables cigars while good is inconsistent with reviews from others and 2) especially on this Maduro line, the wrappers are noticeably different lighter, less glossy, and more rustic in appearance.

I love the Cohiba Robusto & the Behike, but was disappointed in this one. I felt the Maduro took over that delectable Cuban leaf flavors & I didn’t even think it was a Cuban. Plus, $38 I thought was a rip off.

On the other hand I do agree with you about the price issue.

I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with you on this one, Jason. I think this is a gorgeous cigar. I do know that one or two sticks from a box are not very well made but if not for that, these are just beautiful! As for the flavor: Lots of chocolaty, milk coffee, biscuit and peppery notes..

I recently (this past weekend) had a Maduro 5 and had the exact same opinion. It was a good cigar and parts of it were fantastic but it was particularly harsh in the first and last portions. A little more bitter/acidic than I prefer.

i’m not agree at all with Jason, for me the cohiba genios is by far one of the best if is not the best cigar that i ever smoked.

The flavor, the color are amazing, a lot of wood, cedar, spices…
