The Casa Magna line has been very popular for years now, and has won quite a few accolades. In fact, previously we’ve reviewed the Casa Magna Colorado Corona, a very enjoyable stogie. The Casa Magna Dominican is a Dominican puro very recently added to the line. According to Terence Reilly of Quesada Cigars, the goal was to create a new taste profile to appeal to a broader international market. It’s available in five sizes: a 6 3/10 x 52 belicoso, 7 x 49 churchill, 6 x 46 corona, 6 x 60 gran toro (gordo) and a 5 1/2 x 52 robusto. I tried the corona.

As far as I can see, this is a house blend for Cigars International, as it’s available on their site and affiliates.

    Appearance : [rating:4/5]
The Casa Magna Dominican Corona has a medium reddish-brown rustic wrapper with some very prominent veins on it and plenty of oil. There is some obvious tooth in spots, but most of the wrapper is smooth to the touch. Whether you like the cigar’s appearance or not will depend on your feelings about rustic cigars.

    Construction : [rating:3/5]
The burn is pretty even, which is good, but I did have some problems with the draw on the Casa Magna Dominican Corona. It was a bit tight, and around the middle third I discovered the problem was that the tobacco was plugged up. I managed to clear that out, and after that the draw was back to normal. It was quite inconvenient.

    Flavor : [rating:3/5]
Hopefully you like spicy cigars, because you get a hard explosion of red pepper right off the top here. Those hot flavors continue through the rest of the smoke, though they do fade to the back. Following the red pepper blast, you pick up a combination of oak and coffee with an earthy backdrop. The hot flavors are softened up a bit by hints of creamy sweetness. Meanwhile, the earth and oak anchor the flavor profile and give it a solid core. The red pepper makes a strong comeback in the middle third, joined by creamy honey and caramel. Add a dash of cocoa and cinnamon and hay as you go along. I did find the changeup of flavors somewhat random as these notes came and went, but the backdrop continued to give the cigar some sense of consistency. Still, it could have used more of that.

    Value : [rating:3/5]
While I enjoyed this cigar, the plug issue as well as the seeming randomness of the flavor profile at moments impacted my feelings about its value. I would have preferred it sold for $5-$6.

    Overall Rating : [rating:3/5]
The Casa Magna Dominican Corona is undeniably an interesting blend, and there were aspects of it that I readily enjoyed. But it could use some work in the construction department, and a more logical progression of flavors would have made the profile even more interesting. There is room for improvement, but it is still worth a try if you can find it at lower prices (CigarBid deals perhaps?).
