I have been enjoying Nicaraguan cigars lately. They can be very rich and powerful developing lots of flavours. The blends are getting more and more complex for our enjoyment.
The short and fat module trend is a reality but thanks god some Marcas keep on bringing to the market elegant and thin ring gauge cigars, reminding us of the old school style.

Vega Fina SUMUM Edicion Especial 2010

Wrapper : Ecuadorian Cubano
Binder : Dominican

I admit that I am not that type of person to smoke cigars from Altadis and General Cigar. There has got to be quite a bit of noise about a cigar to impel me pick up a stick at B&M and buy it knowing it was made by these companies. Say what you want, but smoking cigars these days from Altadis and General Cigar is like going to the golden arches for a hamburger or the deep fried cauldrons at the Colonel’s,… it’s just not my thing. But the Vega Fina brand, with its European targeting, had me intrigued enough to reach out of my comfort zone and give it a try.

Long a favorite among the Spanish, Altadis has made the Vega Fina a unique experience within their myriads of brands. I guess they thought it would be a good time to bring a value priced, cubanesque, Limited Edition smoke to this side of the Atlantic after the grand success of other cubanesque cigars (i.e. Quesada Espana).

VegaFina Short Corona

VegaFina Short Corona
Origin : Dominican Republic
Format : Petit Corona
Size : 102 x 16 mm
Ring : 40
Wrapper : Brazil
Binder : Dominican Republic
Filler : Dominican Republic, Peru
Price : ~2€ each

I initially planned to review another petit corona, but (I am getting used to it…) my local B&M ran out of those and I ended up buying a few VegaFina Short Coronas, since they were cheap and reminded me of my good experiences with the Robusto. Back home, I went to the Altadis website to get some more information about this stick and I was quite surprised to see that it was not even there and the cigars listed definitely had a brighter wrapper shade. After some research, I found out that indeed the cigars sold in Europe are completely different: instead of an Ecuadorian claro wrapper, a maduro oscuro from Brazil is used and the filler is Dominican/Peruvian (vs Columbian/Dominican/Honduran in the US). However, both cigars are hecho a mano in la Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic.
