It’s hard to believe that Asylum Cigars has only been around since 2012. They’ve become a huge name in the industry in a very short time. Mostly they’ve become famous for the Asylum 13. The number 13 is quite significant in occult circles, and Asylum has followed the same trend with the choice of “33”—a master number in the field of numerology. The number is displayed on the cigar on a shiny iridescent silver band under the familiar Illuminati symbol of an eye inside a pyramid.

    Appearance : [rating:4/5]
This is a very rustic-looking cigar with prominent veins and visible seams. Despite this, the overall texture of the leaf is fairly smooth (not toothy). It’s very slick with oil, and has a light to medium brown color. The band is quite unusual, but it stands out from the wrapper, immediately grabbing your attention with its holographic silver shine.

    Construction : [rating:4/5]
The draw on this cigar is very nice. The burn was relatively straight, but there were moments when I needed to make touch-ups. A few times the line was able to correct itself. Either way, it wasn’t a big hassle. The ash is white and very firm. The 33 burns at a perfect rate, never getting hot or harsh.

    Flavor : [rating:5/5]
The first third of the cigar is dominated by earth flavors with plenty of cedar, caramel, and spice packed in. It’s a complex profile; I also noticed nuts, leather, and a hint of something toasted, maybe bread or cake. In the middle third, you get a sweet tobacco flavor, and there’s significantly more pepper and cedar. I can still detect whatever the bread note is in the background. It definitely reminds me of standing in a bakery. It’s warm and inviting, and I can almost smell the butter being used in the bread or cake or whatever it is. The pepper falls back into the background alongside the bread note toward the final third, but this is short-lived. In the last third, it comes back to the fore and brings the baking note along with it. Now the tobacco flavor takes the backseat. Since the bakery flavors are my favorite, this is a great way to end.

It is easy to smoke this one down to the nub. It doesn’t get hot at all. I loved the flavors, and especially the way they blended one into the next so smoothly. I often feel like flavor changes in cigars are random, just there to keep you guessing. I didn’t get that impression at all with this cigar. Every change seemed logical. There was a consistency that wove throughout; the players stayed the same, but they changed places, like it was all an intricate dance.

    Value : [rating:3.5/5]
This is a very good cigar, and it is probably worth the $10, but I do wish it were a few dollars less (it’s a 4.5×50 after all…). At this price, it is still a treat to be enjoyed now and again, and not something to smoke every day. But I would love to smoke it every day if I could.

    Overall Rating : [rating:4.5/5]
Even though I dropped a point in several categories, the amazing flavors and the perfect way in which they are blended together make me want to score this with a 5/5, so I’ll settle for 4.5 stars. This is a very nice cigar for winter with its warm, comforting flavors. Asylum is continuing to make a name for itself with this one!
