The Quesada Tributo Alvarito is the smallest cigar you can purchase in the Quesada Tributo line. It’s a Petit Corona, measuring just 4 ½ x 40, and costing only around $5.00. It was designed as a tribute cigar to Alvaro Quesada Jr., and is only the second blend by the Quesada family to bear their name.

If you know the story behind the Quesada Seleccion Espana, you might be a bit surprised at the title of this review. Europe? Weren't these supposed to be released in Spain, then a few boxes leaked to the US because the cigars were really good? [you can find some more information about this cigar here and here]

Well, I mentioned 'Europe' simply because I found this stick in a B&M in Amsterdam and it didn't have the second "Seleccion Espana" band. Looking at the size and the main band (as well as the flavor profile), I am fairly confident this is the same blend, released across Europe (or just in the Netherlands? I don't know). Needless to say, I was pretty excited to sample these because they received really good press overseas.

Manuel Quesada has been on a roll this year with absolute fantastic releases. I would probably go out on a limb and call him the cigar maker of the year so far for 2011. MATASA released the “Seleccion Espana” exclusively for B&M in Spain. Why only Spain and not the U.S.? I have no idea. Apparently they didn’t think this would be a hit here at home. But the few stores that had the privilege of getting these sticks here in the United States got to see them fly off the shelves. Will they ever be released eventually in the U.S., time will tell.

This review has been a long time coming. I bought a ten count box of these, and instead of writing a review when I got them I smoked almost all of them. So here goes,…

In July 2009 Jorge Armenteros (President – Tobacconist University) posted what he called a “heads up” about an excellent new cigar that was going to be released in the Fall, the Quesada 35th Anniversary from Matasa. Well when Jorge speaks about cigars, I listen and I went straight to my premium brick & mortar tobacconist and ordered them. The 35 is not only the latest from Matasa, but a rather unique offering from them as well. It commemorates the 35th anniversary of Matasa and was actually created by the fifth-generation of the Quesada family to be in the cigar business, who family patriarch Manolo Quesada calls, “the young ones”. It is also their first, I believe, to bear the family name.
