Cigar Review – Por Larranaga Coronas (Regional Edition Alemania)

Origin : CubaPor Larranaga
Format : Coronas
Size : 142MM x 42 (1200 cabinets of 50 made)
Hand-Made
Price : ~$12

It took me some times to post this review as the first one I smoked was plugged. The second one was tight, the third one as well and the fourth plugged…
We all know how much Cuba is rushing their production since few years, but this is getting ridiculous. I would rather wait longer than having plugged and tight cigars all the time. Smaller sizes are most likely to be tight or plugged as the error margin is smaller.
Therefore this review has been done on the least tight of all of them.

Cigar Review – Por Larranaga Picadores

Origin : CubaPor Larranaga
Format : Hermosos 4
Size : 127 x 48
Hand-Made
Price : ~$15

Note from the Inspector :
Por Larranaga is the oldest brand still in production. It was created in 1834 and since then the marca develops light to medium blends, very elegant and soft. In the 1950s For Larranaga factory was the producing the finest cigars In Cuba. The Pro Larranaga factory was for many years the “student factory”, training the rollers.
At present, the brand comprises 3 current production cigars, the petit corona being one of my all time favourite short smoke and now the Picadores adding a larger format to the range.

Por Larranaga Petit Corona

Por Larranaga Petit Corona

Origin : CubaPor Larranaga
Format : Petit Corona (Mareva)
Size : 129 x 16.67 mm (5 1/8 x 42)
Hand-Made
Price : 10-12 GBP (UK prices)

The Por Larranaga Petit Corona is a hand-rolled Cuban cigar and this particular vitola is one of three readily available in the UK.

Cigars are frequently referred to as “sticks” and in the case of this one, that is quite apt. The construction is rustic, to say the least, giving the Larranaga a very gnarly appearance. However, the construction is also excellent, with no hint of the wrapper coming loose at any stage. The cap is a particularly solid construct, visibly consisting of several layers which hold out well following a hole being punched.

The visible, surface unevenness is mirrored during the burn, resulting in a crooked yet robust ash stack. There is unevenness internally also, with a couple of firm areas – plugs – which need firm but careful pressure, all round, to loosen the draw.

Por Larranaga Montecarlo

Por Larranaga Montecarlo

Origin : CubaPor Larranaga
Format : Slim Panetela (Delicioso)
Size : 6.3 x 33
Hand-Made
Price : ~$125 for a box of 25

I got this cigar in a trade on r/cigars and, to be honest, wasn’t expecting much out of it. Not my favorite brand, not my favorite format (although Montecristo Especial No. 1, a slightly thicker panatela, is a fine smoke!). These cigars used to be machine-made back in the days, but now proudly bear the hand-made tag. Besides, they are rather cheap… Let’s see how the Por Larranaga Montecarlo fared?

Format : Pyramide
Size : 156 x 21 mm (6.1 x 52)
Release : 2009
Hand-Made
Price : ~$450 for a box of 25

While I was in Geneva this spring, I thought I’d take advantage of this special opportunity to try the Por Larranaga Valiosos Regional Edition Switzerland. The cigar cost me $22.00. I thought that it would be well worth it to try this cigar out for everyone who can’t take advantage of this release. The Valiosos was produced as a limited edition regional cigar; only 2400 boxes were distributed for sale in Switzerland.

This is the third review in my series of Asia Pacific RE smokes and, let me be honest from the very beginning, Por Larranaga Belicosos Extra is my favorite one. Although both the strong and very typical Bolivar Short and the slightly unbalanced Por Larranaga Robusto both scored good marks, this little belicoso outranks them in terms of flavors. Let’s see how.

This is a regional edition for Asia Pacific, released in 2007. Por Larranaga do not have a robusto in their regular line and I was quite curious how this one would taste. In fact I was even more curious to see whether this cigar would share the flavor profile with the regular production petit corona.

I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about the Por Larrañaga Petit Corona and after reading Jason’s review I finally decided to pick up a few. They were bought in Paris as singles so I don’t have the box code. I can only tell you that they had a few months of humidor time.
