This is a cigar I’ve been eagerly awaiting since I heard it will feature some of Pepin’s Pelo de Oro leaf. What’s Pelo de Oro? Meaning “golden hair”, PdO is the grandfather to the modern day Corojo wrapper. According to Tobacconist University:

It is usually a reference to a potent Cuban cigar varietal which was popular in the early and middle 20th Century. This tobacco could be used for wrapper and filler as well, but is disease prone and can infest entire crops and regions so it is rarely grown today. Pelo de Oro can be considered a ‘campesino’ or ‘guajiro’ tobacco since many agricultural workers grow and smoke it to this day – especially in the central part of Cuba. It is known for being quite strong and flavorful as well as sweet.

So as the story goes, Pepin’s son Jamie had a secret project he was working on. He was creating a cigar in tribute to his father and he was doing it behind Pepin’s back. He managed to keep it a secret up until he was nearly finished with it and when Pepin found out about it he told his son to give him three cigars which he promptly smoked and loved. That is the Birth Story of My Father Cigars. The cigar is made up of tobacco from the Garcia’s own farms for the binder and filler, and the wrapper is a lovely and oily Habano leaf grown in Ecuador by the Oliva Tobacco family.

The My Father Le Bijou 1922 is an extension of the My Father line which was created by Jose Pepin Garcia’s Son Jamie to honor his father Pepin. Well Pepin created the Le Bijou himself to honor his father, Jamie’s grand father. Le Bijou means The Jewel and the 1922 is Pepin’s father’s birth year. It is a good looking cigar. The wrapper has a dry matte finish to it and it looks like a carved piece of dark wood. This is another cigar that sports 2 cigar bands. They are ornate, and beautiful, and large which is odd looking on this petite robusto as most of its length is covered up by the two bands. Though dual bands have become a bit of an annoyance for me lately as they have become more commonplace; on a positive note the bands on the Le Bijou always come off very easily and I have not had one yet that damaged the wrapper. Because this vitola is so short and the bands are so large, you really need to remove one if not both of the bands before you smoke it. Again, annoying but not too much so since they do come off easily.

Introduced in 2008, this brand was created in honor of Jose “Pepin” Garcia by his son Jaime. The wrapper comes from Ecuador which is different from the traditional Nicaraguan wrapper used by Don Pepin Garcia. The cigar line offers different vitolas for enjoyment: a Torpedo (No. 2 -5.5 X 54); a Toro (No. 3 - 6 X 49); Long Panatela (No. 4 - 7.5 X 38); Grand Corona (Cedros Deluxe Eminentes - 5.6 X 46); Lonsdale (Cedros Deluxe Cervantes - 6.5 x 44); and today’s feature cigar, the No. 1 Robusto. The No. 3 was named “2009 Best Cigar of the Year” by Cigar Aficionado, and it received a very high rating of 94. The cigar features its own website; however, the section that covers the My Father’s line is still under construction.
