Recently I purchased an aged variety of cigar readily available in the US market to see if there other cigars out there that the average US aficionado could enjoy at reasonable prices. Macanudo has always been a popular smoke, and I went on Cigar.com’s website to make my choice. I give a tip of the cap to Sean O. and Andy D. at Cigar.com for their assistance in processing my order. Customer service was impeccable and these guys were immensely helpful in processing my requests. I purchased all three vitolas available — Perfecto, Toro and Robusto, and since they all were basically the same cigar, my comments are directed at all three configurations.

Filler : Nicaragua, Dom. Rep., Brazil

Produced by General Cigar, the Macanudo Vintage Maduro 1997 is the first cigar from the General Vintage line to wear a maduro wrapper. Not only is this the first maduro vintage, the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper is 13 years old. Being the brainchild of General’s tobacco operations manager Edumundo Garcia, the vintage maduro 1997’s come packaged very different than your typical cigar. The cigars have a metal band near the head of the stick, which is referred to as “Reserva Dorado” (meaning gold reserve). The point of the metal ring is to not only catch the aficionado’s eye but to serve as a humidity gauge. That’s right! If the cigar starts to dry out the metal band will become loose, just as if the cigar is over humidified it will inflate like a balloon, squishing itself against the metal ring. Be aware though, once they have sold out of the cigars bearing the metal ring bands, the cigars will be marked with the normal Macanudo Vintage bands. So if you’re a collector you may want to hunt for them now.

Macanudo Reserva Dorada 2010

Macanudo Reserva Dorada 2010

The Macanudo Reserva Dorada is a dark maduro with an earthy aroma and a shiny metal band. It is an eye catcher on the shelves. I have to be honest. I am not a fan of Macanudo in general (although I was recently impressed by the new Gran Cru), but when I saw this cigar with that big metal ring on it, I had to buy it just to try and also to have that band. For what I don’t know but I had to have it so I guess the gimmick worked. The flavors are mild and classic maduro, a slight sweetness with chocolate an coffee flavors. The flavors were a little thin though with not much body to speak of. The draw was a little looser than I prefer but it did produce plenty of thick aromatic smoke. The burn was a little tricky at time requiring one or two touch ups and the ash was very loose and flaky so I had to keep an ash tray nearby.

The final verdict, while it was an OK smoke, it was too mild for my tastes and too thin in the body department. The ash was kind of troublesome too. However, the flavors were good and in the end I guess I enjoyed it enough to be happy with the purchase though I probably won’t be looking to smoke another. However, if you like mild smokes and that classic maduro sweet flavor, this cigar is right in your wheel house.

It’s been quite a while since I reviewed a Macanudo on this blog. My latest experiences were, at the very least, disappointing. When I heard that a new blend was being released, “rich, dark and inexpected”, full-bodied and oriented toward experienced smokers, it stirred up my curiosity. Consequently, when I saw it on sale I immediately picked up a fiver. Let’s see how the Macanudo 1968 performed.

Unlike the previous Macanudo reviewed on this site, the Prince Philip Maduro at least has some personality. It is not a bad cigar, yet it’s far from being a very good one.

Macanudo is one of the brands I was eager to try, since a lot of people are searching for “macanudo” here at Cigar Inspector. As soon as I had an opportunity, I got myself a few of Hampton Courts (tubos) for about 6 USD each. According to Leafy Times, the Robust line is the most interesting although I can’t say that I was impressed with this cigar.
