I am always on the lookout for non-Cuban cigars that I can add to my collection. I have often heard about the Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur but never had the opportunity to try it. While in Manhattan a few months back I decided to seek them out and was able to find a 5-pack for $30.00. I was told by the clerk that they did not have many more available and that they sell out pretty quick. I figured it had something to do with the very affordable price of $6.00 a cigar and was actually hoping that it had more to do with the cigar itself. The MSRP for this cigar is $5.00 so I am sure that you can find this cigar online for that price. So how does this $5.00 to $7.00 robusto-sized cigar hold up? I wanted to be as fair as possible so I smoked two cigars 4 days apart. The following is my review detailing my experience.

First things first, the cigar comes inside a cool-looking tube and in the middle of the tube, you’ll find the words “DARK KNIGHT” in big font. For a huge Batman geek like myself, that’s a great thing. And I hate to say it, but that alone would get me to buy this cigar. I know, I know. I’m the first one to preach about not getting sucked into marketing schemes, but I guess we’ll always be victims once in a while.

On the sniffles, the very dark and oily wrapper gave off a caramel chocolate and cedar smell. (It does come wrapped in a sheet of cedar) The foot smells very woody and on the pre-draw I picked up some more chocolate, but with a tea bag aftertaste behind it. Finding flavors and scents before the smoke is always a good thing. Perhaps I'm in for a good cigar?

Below is the second dual review in our series of 6.

Ed: Excalibur 1066 is a product from Hoyo de Monterrey (General Cigar). The cigar is named for the year of the Norman Conquest of England. Although William the Conqueror led the Normans to victory, several of the vitolas are named after King Arthur and several of the members of the court (Galahad and Lancelot). Today’s dual review feature is named after the Merlin - Arthur’s wizard, prophet, and adviser. In the Excalibur 1066 line, Merlin is the name given to the robusto.

Stephen: According to the Cigar World website, this line is no longer called the Excalibur 1066, it's now the Excalibur Cameroon. However, they don't say that any change was made to the blend. These cigars are available in 4 sizes and are made at the Honduras American Tabaco factory in Cofradia, Honduras.

I had read some nice things about this line of cigars and had passed over them many times in my local cigar shops until recently, when I grabbed one impulsively before leaving. I am glad that I did. This cigar's wrapper is grown in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras and the blend contains tobacco from 4 different countries.
