The name Davidoff is nearly synonymous with luxury. The name also has a reputation for quality and excellence. There is a lot of great information about the man and the company on their website Davidoff.com. One other commonly held perception of Davidoff is mild cigars and there are many smokers in the cigar community that mistake “mild” to mean “flavorless”. The Special R is the first Davidoff cigar I have had the pleasure of trying. No matter what line of Davidoff Cigars you might be interested in, the fact is they are all pretty expensive, almost universally costing more than $10 a piece. With my predisposition towards strong robust cigars, I admit that I allowed their mild reputation and lofty price tag keep me away up until now.

I have a friend who is a fan of Davidoff and more precisely their blender Henke Kelner. I have listened to him rail against the the idea that Davidoff only makes mild cigars and one of the lines he liked to use as an example of a more robust offering is the “Special” line of Davidoff cigars. So I was happy to be able to review this particular Davidoff. The Special R is not a mild cigar. I found it to be a solid medium bodied smoke with robust flavors balanced by excellent subtleties making for an engaging smoke. A core of smooth and chewy flavors of espresso and earth were complemented by more subtle notes of oak and nuts and an almost buttery feel on the palate. At times I picked up flashes of slightly sweet, almost caramel like notes on the finish. The construction was exquisite with a perfect burn, nice ash, and a spot on draw. I found the Davidoff Special R to be a very enjoyable, elegant smoke.

This super limited cigar is only available at Davidoff retail stores. My Davidoff Royal Robusto purchased from the Madison Avenue store. It is the second in the Royal Series, the first being the incredible Salamone.

The cigar starts out smooth and creamy with some woody notes along with an underlying creaminess. That Kelner “musk” is also present in full effect.

The burn is dead even and it draws like a dream.

As I smoke this, and enjoying every minute of it, I can’t help but wish that all cigars are made and blended this well, just at a sixth of the price!

As I finish it up, I get ample wood and cream, along with a faint hint of white pepper and coffee notes on the finish.

Just another incredible cigar from Mr. Kelner!

I had this little cigar sitting in my humidor for over 3 years and decided it was time for a revisit. I used to enjoy this cigar, but I abandoned it because of its exorbitant price. It had been so long since I smoked one that I only vaguely remembered what it tasted like, but I found a short online review I did the last time I smoked one, which was 2 years ago. According to my review, I thought it was medium bodied and sweet with hints of honey. Here is what I think of it now...

This is a tubo version although it is not visible on the picture. I usually like Davidoffs even though they might be considered overpriced. On the milder side, they tend to provide a pleasant flavor and boast a reliable construction. This is what I was expecting from this tubed Special R.

Wow, this is one beautiful cigar. It is satiny and smooth to the touch. The cellophane is yellow from 13 years of contact with this beautiful Connecticut Shade wrapper.

The pre-light draw was easy and the cigar lit very easily from the flame of my IM Corona lighter. The flavors, as expected were mild, but numerous. I was hit with waves of cream and wood, leather and nuts, with some of the Kelner mustiness thrown in as well.

The ash burned red hot leaving the most striking white ash I have ever seen. It did not heat up the cigar too much and the burn was dead on even. The exhale is rich with creamy coffee and nuts with some leather and grass.

The Davidoff Mille 3000 burned flawlessly another example of the artistry of Henrik Kelner. I enjoyed every minute I spent with this cigar!

Overall the cigar was creamy and woody, mild but with a lot of flavor still after 13 years. It was a pleasure to get the opportunity to try it!

This cigar looks beautiful! Hardly any visible veins, the wrapper looks to me to have gotten darker with age, compared to the current Davidoffs which use Ecuadorian Connecticut wrappers. This has a little sheen on it and judging by the cellophane, this baby has been resting for a long time!

I clip the cigar and the pre-light draw is firm but yielding, which I expected with this ancient panetela.

As I light it am hoping that 10 years has mellowed this cigar out too much.

I have been patiently waiting to try this cigar for some time. When I heard the news that Davidoff was going to make a Maduro cigar, I got very excited.

One of the reasons is that I find it difficult to find a consistent maduro, especially one that burns evenly. I figured if anyone could do it, Kelner could!

The Davidoff Maduro R is lighter than other maduros, but way darker than any other Davidoff. The draw was nice and easy and it took a light fairly well. Unfortunately right off the bat, the cigar started burning unevenly. It appears that even Henke Kelner is not immune to the difficulties inherent in a thick wrapper leaf such as the maduro. I think he clearly went with a Nicaraguan Maduro leaf rather than a Connecticut Broadleaf for this very reason.

Flavor wise, the cigar was excellent, it was rich and sweet. It was earthy and full of chocolate and coffee notes. The finish was also not as dry as other Davidoff cigars.

This is definitely Davidoff’s strongest blend, there is a lot of added spice and flavor with the darker wrapper.

One other thing, I got a few tar globs at the onset of the smoke. I had to clip it up further in order to continue smoking. This was a first for me and Davidoffs. So there were a few construction issues (gasp!) but I really enjoyed the flavor. I need to try another couple before I form my full opinion on the new Davidoff Maduro R.

So I got this from my buddy Hal, who is the proud new proprietor of Capital City Cigars (Raleigh, NC). This was part of his MAJOR collection of cigars and one of his personal favorites.

This cigar was made in 2003 and was the second of Davidoff‘s yearly Limited Edition smokes. Here’s a blurb on the cigar from Davidoff.com:

The Davidoff Limited Edition 2003 is the first cigar from the house of Davidoff that is rolled using tobaccos from one, single crop the harvest of the year 2000. During the winter of 1999/2000, the tobacco plants cultivated in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador flourished in perfect weather conditions. Characterised by an exceptionally aromatic quality, the tobaccos harvested in this particular year were predestined to become vintage cigars in the Davidoff Limited Edition 2003. These noble tobaccos are rolled in the shape of a stately, yet elegant Panetela Extra format.

To say this was a good cigar would be a vast understatement.

What hit me first was the dark color and flawless wrapper. I knew I was in for a treat!

The cigar had a nice draw for a panetela and the initial flavor was an overwhelming woodiness with a rich tobacco core. Touches of pepper came in and out through the smoke as it developed into a nice creamy medium strength/full body smoke. This is definitely not your father’s Davidoff!

As I enjoyed this smoke, which like all Davidoffs needs to be sipped, I couldn’t help but think how good a Davidoff cigar would be if the Cuban Embargo was lifted and the Davidoff famliy and Henke Kelner were allowed to get their hands on some Cuban tobacco!

Truly this was one of the better smokes I have tried in a long time!
