Avo Signature is the last classic line from Mr. Uvezian that I haven’t reviewed yet. [Check out my previous reviews of Avo Classic, Avo XO and Avo Domaine]. The Signature blend was created to celebrate the 75th birthday of Avo Uvezian, the Dominican binder and filler wear an Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper (quite common for Avo cigars).

I could not resist when I saw this beautiful cigar in a cigar shop in Paris. I have a special feeling for perfectos since this is a vitola that is almost always perfectly constructed and allows me to concentrate on flavor characteristics of the stick. The tobacco in this cigar comes from the "Domaine AVO", a finca in the Dominican Republic that belongs to Avo Uvezian, the brand founder. The wrapper is a twice fermented Ecuador.

This is a very special cigar. Not only did this blend lead to the AVO 787 but this is the only LE to have a different sized European release. The original AVO 22 was 5 7/8″ x 50 while the European release has a ring gauge of only 41. The Europeans historically prefer thinner cigars hence the change. I got my hands on one of these in a trade and couldn’t wait to smoke it.

Then & Now: Avo 22 VS Avo 787

Avo 22

The AVO 22 is the second Limited Edition cigar that was made into a regular production cigar. The 787 was released in 2007 to much ballyhoo and prompted me to write another side by side review: then & now.

Then & Now: Avo Signature VS Avo 75th Anniversary

Avo 75th Anniversary

Ok, I’d like to try a new little section where I compare older blends to their current counterparts. It may be just aged cigars against a “fresh” cigar, but I have the luxury of a very special comparison with the AVO 75th Anniversary Double Corona, which was the first AVO LE made, against its current incarnation in the AVO Signature Double Corona.

Due to the popularity of the 75th Anniversary, Avo decided to create a regular production line similar to the essence of the Signature. I’ll start with the AVO Signature first.

Avo cigars are the first premium cigars I ever smoked. The classic Avo No. 2 may be the cigar responsible for setting me down the path of premium cigar smoking and collecting as a hobby. It got me hooked on hand-made premium cigars. Way back then, the Avo No.2 was my expensive special occasion smoke, because in the beginning I had always thought that $7 for a cigar was extremely extravagant. My how things have changed… lol. Over the years I have moved away from the AVO brand as part of my regular rotation of smokes but it has still always held a special place in my heart because of its role in my early days of cigar appreciation. Today I have an Avo Domaine No. 30.

This is my favorite cigar. Ever. This was the 2005 Edition of the AVO LE or “Birthday” Cigar. This celebrated Avo’s 79th birthday. Every year I get excited for the LE release hoping it can equal this cigar, but it never has. The closest is the AVO 22 (2002) and the AVO Legacy (2004).

Ah… an AVO LE. They come out to celebrate the birthday of Avo Uvezian begining with his 75th. The Legacy celebrates his 78th. Every year I look forward to these small batch cigars. After all, my favorite cigar of all time came from the AVO LEs Series (the LE5 of course).

I figured with 4 years of age, this would have mellowed nicely. Boy was I wrong!
