Released in 2011, the Ambos Mundos Short No.1 Habano is an extension of the already popular Pete Johnson line. Ambos Mundos meaning “both worlds” is a blending of Nicaraguan binder and fillers with an Ecuadorian wrapper. Ambos Mundos cigars are produced by Pepin Garcia and are considered Johnson’s value-priced line. The full Ambos Mundos portfolio consists of eight different sizes/blends, although the official website shows only six sizes (have the Shorts been discontinued?). They are as follows:

  • Short No. 1 Habano 4 1/2 x 46
  • Short No. 2 Sumatra 4 1/2 x 46
  • Robusto No. 1 Habano 5 x 50
  • Robusto No. 2 Sumatra 5 x 50
  • Toro No. 1 Habano 6 x 50
  • Toro No. 2 Sumatra 6 x 50
  • Grande No. 1 Habano 5 1/2 x 56
  • Grande No. 2 Sumatra 5 1/2 x 56

This is a cigar that I came across immediately following the release of Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list of 2009. Naturally, being the obsessive-compulsive BOTL that I am, as soon as the list was published I immediately went to my local tobacconist to search out the 22 cigars on the list which are available in the U.S. My long trek through the top 25 list spanned several months, two states, and at least a half-dozen shops (and I still haven’t smoked the Opus X). Some of the cigars I smoked, of which reviews are forthcoming, were positively superb (the Padron 45th, the Casa Magna Solomon, and the Padilla 1932, to name a few), some not so much, some pretty good but simply not worth the hype, or the price tag, or both; but the broke college student in me holds in highest esteem those smokes that can consistently put a smile on my face for less than 12 dollars. The cigar that I’ll be reviewing today does just that, and for a mere 6 dollar price tag and about 70 minutes smoke time, you simply can’t go wrong.

Ambos Mundos, which means both worlds is the newest line of cigars from Pete Johnson and Tatuaje. Made, like all of Pete’s cigars, by Pepin Garcia this line of cigars is an economy cigar whose release is aptly timed given current economic conditions. Pete had this to say about it:

“My original idea for the Tatuaje brand was for it to be not as expensive as it turned out to be,” said Johnson, “but having it made in Miami kind of set that expensive precedent, so I made this cigar partly due to the economy and partly because this is where I originally wanted the cigar to be priced.”
